Keutschach am See combines prehistoric heritage with a landscape of four named lakes and moorland. The pile-dwelling settlement in Lake Keutschach takes you back to prehistoric times; trails and historic buildings offer different points of interest. When planning your trip, consider whether you prefer archaeological context, nature information along a loop, a very flat themed trail or a cycling tour with a named destination.

Pile-Dwelling History at Lake Keutschach

The prehistoric settlement in Lake Keutschach has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011. It is the oldest pile-dwelling settlement known to date in Austria. Its UNESCO status places it within an international World Heritage Site; its designation as the oldest known settlement of its kind in Austria gives it a distinct national significance.

The World Heritage window in the Keutschach municipal office provides information about the settlement and displays original finds from it. Information and artefacts are presented together. This offers insight into the subject both through the history of the archaeological site and through objects preserved from the settlement.

The Four-Lakes Valley and Moorland

Keutschach am See lies in the unspoilt Four-Lakes Valley, with Rauschelesee, Keutschacher See, Hafnersee and BaĂźgeigensee. Keutschach Moor has also been part of the international Ramsar Convention for many years. The lakes and moorland add a distinct landscape perspective to the history of the pile dwellings.

Choose Trails by Their Features

The Keutschach Moor Nature Trail is a seven-kilometre circular hiking route. Twelve information panels explain the sensitive moorland habitat. Those who want to learn about the landscape while walking will find a clear thematic focus here, alongside the circular route.

The Natura Trail Keutschacher Seental is ten kilometres long, very flat and easy to manage with a pushchair. By comparison, the Moor Nature Trail is the shorter of the two stated routes and is laid out as a loop with information panels. Suitability for pushchairs and the very flat profile are specific features of the Natura Trail. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.

Two other routes can also be distinguished by type. The Pyramidenkogelweg Keutschach starts at the panoramic information board by the municipal office, passes the ruins of Reifnitz Castle and continues to the observation tower on Pyramidenkogel. The Löffler Runde Keutschach, by contrast, starts at Keutschach Castle and follows a cycle path to St. Nikolai.

Castle, Church and Observation Tower

Keutschach Castle was built in the first decades of the 16th century. Today it is the administrative and cultural centre of the town and the municipality of Keutschach. St. Nikolai Keutschach Church was built in 1150 and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The church’s history therefore reaches back significantly further than the castle’s.

The Pyramidenkogel observation tower has a 120-metre-long, covered adventure slide, described as the highest in Europe. Alongside the historic sites and trails, this adds another clearly stated feature of the observation tower.
