Plescherken offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay surrounded by landscapes, history and local attractions. The Penkensee Circular Trail runs from Plescherken through a moor between Lake Keutschach and Lake Hafner, then continues to Lake Penkensee. Nearby, you can also visit the prehistoric stilt-house settlement in Lake Keutschach. These different highlights help you find your bearings: a trail through moorland and lakes, a place of cultural and historical interest, and places to eat and buy farm produce.
Moorland and Lakes in the Keutschach Valley
The Penkensee Circular Trail connects several landscape features along its route: it runs through a moor between Lake Keutschach and Lake Hafner, then continues to Lake Penkensee. This offers a different focus from visiting a single body of water. Lake Hafner itself lies in the Keutschach Valley and has largely unspoilt shores. If you are considering Plescherken for its scenery, you can explore both a specific trail and a distinctive lakeshore landscape.
The wider landscape extends beyond the immediate area. In the Keutschach–Schiefling moorland and lake landscape in the surrounding region, fens, moisture-loving forests, meadows and lakes shape the scenery; the landscape was formed by the Draugletscher glacier. This places the description of the circular trail in a broader natural setting without attributing all the region’s landscape features to the trail itself.
Stilt-House History at Lake Keutschach
A prehistoric stilt-house settlement dating back approximately 6,000 years lies in Lake Keutschach. Since 2011, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” and is located near Plescherken. The World Heritage Window in the Keutschach municipal office, also nearby, offers another perspective. Information and original finds from the settlement are displayed there. Check access to the municipal office before your visit.
The lake and the World Heritage Window offer two different ways to explore the past: the settlement lies in the lake, while the exhibition presents information and original finds. This distinction can help you put the site in context if you want to combine scenery with cultural history.
Restaurant and Farm Produce
The Seerestaurant Hafnersee at Plescherken 5 is right on Lake Hafner and has a large sun terrace. The 2024 municipal guide lists daily specials, pizza and snacks. Check seasonal availability before visiting. This also helps distinguish a possible meal at the restaurant from shopping for, or learning about, farm produce.
Kotzian Farm at Plescherken 20 offers a variety of grains and flours, as well as spelt, Haden, rye, wheat and potatoes. The restaurant and farm have different focuses: meals and a terrace right by the lake at the former, grains, flours and other farm produce at the latter. For this offering too, it is advisable to check seasonal availability in advance.
Cycling Route and Lido
The Gravel Speedway Rosental cycling route offers another perspective and passes through Plescherken. Remnants from the 18th-century mining and gold-prospecting period can still be found in the village. Compared with the Penkensee Circular Trail, this route focuses on cycling and traces of mining; the other trail runs through moorland to Lake Penkensee.
The Hafnersee lido is listed at the address Plescherkem 5. Check seasonal public access before visiting. This listing can serve as a point of reference without implying that it is currently accessible.
