Radsberg is situated on the Sattnitz ridge. Several clearly distinct themes can help you plan your trip: the parish church and its architectural and parish history, New Year singing at the turn of the year, and opportunities for hiking and paragliding. Before searching for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether cultural history, a seasonal custom or an outdoor activity should be the focus of your stay.
Parish Church and Architectural History
Radsberg/Radiše Parish Church is a unified late Gothic building dating from the beginning of the 16th century. It was documented in 1216 as a chapter parish of Maria Saal. The imposing west tower was built in 1557. These dates refer to different historical aspects: 1216 marks its ecclesiastical status, the beginning of the 16th century its architectural style, and 1557 the west tower. Describing the building as uniformly late Gothic characterizes it as a whole, while the tower’s construction date provides a specific point of reference. The parish church can therefore be viewed both as an architectural whole and through individual milestones in its history.
New Year Singing and Commemorative Culture
New Year singing adds a seasonal touch. At the turn of the year, men from the villages of Radsberg go from house to house singing the old New Year song “Je žavost prevelika.” The men’s choir of the Slovenian Cultural Association Radsberg/Radiše sings the song in all nine Radsberg villages during the three days before New Year’s Day. The custom is tied to a specific period and practice: the song is carried from house to house. For trip planning, the turn of the year provides a clear calendar reference, distinct from the historical construction dates of the parish church.
Another historical focus is the memorial to the deportation of Carinthian Slovenes. It is located in front of the cultural centre in Radsberg/Radiše and was erected in 1996. From April 1942, Slovenian-speaking families in southern Carinthia were taken from their homes in several operations and, after a stop at the Ebenthal/Žrelec assembly camp in Klagenfurt, deported to various forced-labour camps. The dates mark different points: 1942 marks the beginning of the deportations described, while 1996 is the year the memorial was erected.
Hiking and Paragliding
There are also specific local connections for outdoor activities. The “Radsberg – Northern Loop” hike passes through the Höfleinmoor and Moosberg to Radsberg, then continues through the Gurnitz Gorge. Radsberg is also the home base of the 1st Carinthian Radsberg Paragliding Club; the flying area has an elevation difference of 400 metres. The two outdoor activities have different focuses: the Northern Loop follows a hiking route through several named places, while paragliding centres on the club’s home base and the elevation difference. If you are choosing between these themes for your stay, each offers a distinct approach to planning your trip.
