The market town of Feistritz im Rosental lies where the Feistritzbach emerges from the foothills of the Karawanks. Its distinctive themes range from water and the Drau Cycle Path to roses and early ironworking. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering what you would like to focus on: the swimming lake and cycle path, mountain experiences nearby, or historic buildings each offer different ways to shape your stay.

Water, activities and mountains

Lake St. Johann can be reached by car or via the Drau Cycle Path. At the lake, you can swim and sunbathe on a spacious lawn. The Drau Cycle Path runs along the Drau. If you want to combine cycling with time by the water, you can include the lake as a swimming destination in your day’s plans.

There are other options for a stay focused on activity. The Klagenfurter HĂĽtte is a destination for hikers. In the area around Feistritz im Rosental, hikers and climbers can enjoy mountain experiences and panoramic views at elevations of up to 1,660 metres above sea level. In St. Johann, bouldering is available at BoulderGARAGE. As operating arrangements may change, check the current rules before your visit.

Roses and local character

The Rose Park is home to more than 6,000 rose bushes of select varieties. It is a tradition in Feistritz im Rosental to present a new edition of the rose napkin once a year. Tourism businesses embrace the rose theme with their own rose menus, rose drinks and rose decorations; individual offerings may change. The rose motif thus extends from the park and a recurring local tradition to the dining scene. If you want to make rose-themed offerings part of your stay, check the specific options for your travel dates.

Industrial history and buildings

The first ironworking sites were established along the Feistritzbach at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1840, Ferdinand Count Egger founded one of Central Europe’s most modern wire-rolling mills along the Feistritzbach. Together, these two milestones connect early ironworking with a later, technologically advanced wire-processing plant.

Buildings also reflect different historical periods. The branch church of the Holy Cross, part of the Suetschach/Sveče parish, stands on a small hill southwest of Feistritz im Rosental. The simple building was constructed around 1720. The Kraigher House dates from the 17th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the village centre. Feistritz im Rosental Castle, also known as Gößnitzerhof, recalls a prominent family. The dates provide two distinct reference points in the history of the buildings, from the 17th century to around 1720.

The waterways play different roles: the early ironworking sites and the wire-rolling mill established in 1840 were built along the Feistritzbach; the cycle path runs along the Drau, while the river in the Rosental is also dammed for power generation. Local history, a recreational route and regional energy use therefore come together in a clear spatial contrast.
