More than 10,000 rock carvings make Sarmishsay a special place in Navoiy Province. The Stone Age depictions show hunting, rituals and social interactions. Those who take time to study the motifs encounter not just individual images, but many different aspects of life at the time.

Rock Art and Desert Landscapes

Distinctive mountain ranges, valleys and unusual rock formations shape the landscape around Sarmishsay. They provide a setting for a diverse range of animal and plant life. Nature and early cultural history are closely intertwined here: the rock art depicts human activities, while the surrounding area supports rich biodiversity.

Aydarkul also combines desert landscapes with nature experiences. The endorheic lake lies in the Kyzylkum Desert and is part of water-tourism routes. Its shores provide habitats for pelicans, swans, herons and bird species listed in Uzbekistan’s Red Book. The abundance of fish supports a fishing season and successful catches. Visitors can also take ethnographic excursions to yurt camps along the shores; opportunities may change, so it is advisable to check current arrangements before planning.

Tudakul has a different character: the reservoir is a desert oasis in Navoiy Province, and its water is highly saline and partly mineralized. There is a recreation area on the shore for sunbathing, swimming and fishing. As access and facilities may change, check the latest information before visiting.

Caravan Routes and Historic Buildings

Rabat-i Malik offers a glimpse into the history of merchant caravans. From the 13th century to the beginning of the 18th century, the site served as a caravanserai. At the same time, the surviving traces reach further back: the remains of an 11th-century palace are located here. The surviving entrance portal is known locally as the “Gates of Bukhara.” The Rabati Malik Sardoba was built in the 11th century to supply the caravanserai of the same name; its water reservoir is 13 meters deep.

The Toshmajid architectural complex stands in the village of Vangozi in Kyzyltepa District. Built in the 16th century, the complex includes a mosque, a minaret, a madrasa, a bathhouse and an old cemetery. Its tower was built between 1583 and 1586. Art and history scholars suspect that Toshmajid was an important Sufi center in the 16th century. Thus, surviving architectural forms and a historical interpretation—clearly presented as a possibility—come together at this site.

The Deggaron Mosque in the village of Khazar, Karman District, is considered an architectural masterpiece. Its construction is dated to the late 11th or possibly early 12th century. A central dome rests on four pillars; the style of construction is described as more typical of pre-Islamic buildings. The architectural and historical complex also includes a museum, a khanaka and the mausoleum of Sheikh Mavlono Orif Deggaroni.

In the center of Nurata, the Chashma Complex comprises monuments and is a sacred place of prayer. The Juma Friday Mosque stands above the sacred spring. Forty wooden columns and a 16-meter dome define its interior and architecture.

Excursions, Regional Routes and Local Cuisine

The ecotourism route and the Sentob recreation area in Nurata District offer another way to experience the landscape, with walks through the foothills and visits to Aydarkul. In Sentob, tourists can go horseback riding, walk in the surrounding area and hike in the mountains. These activities offer different experiences, from trails through the foothills to exploring the mountains. If you plan such activities, it is best to check current options in advance.

A route description dated December 17, 2024, mentions a 340-kilometer “tourist ring” through the region, covering more than 60 places, including Nurata, Karman and Kyzyltepa. The route details provided may evolve. As a regional guide, the ring shows how the province’s historic sites and landscapes can be explored through a variety of themes.

Konimeh District has an ecopark for ecotourism and camping. Recreational facilities include a musical fountain, rides for children, a sports field and an amphitheater for cultural activities. Visitors can also sample Uzbek, Kazakh and Karakalpak cuisine, as well as fresh camel milk and shubat. As food offerings and facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current selection before visiting.
