Two petroglyph sites with a total of 10,000 ancient rock carvings: Sarmishsay in the Nurata District of the Navoiy Region adds an archaeological highlight to a trip to Navoiy Province. The images are generally dated to the Bronze Age, between 3000 and 900 BCE. For travelers interested in early cultural history, the large number of rock carvings and their dating provide a striking introduction to the region.
Pilgrimage Sites and Architecture
Chashma majmuasi also represents a blend of religious significance and architecture. Thousands of people visit it on pilgrimage and to see its monuments. The Juma Mosque stands above the sacred spring and has 40 wooden columns and a dome 16 meters wide. The spring has a constant water temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius. This site brings together pilgrimage practices, architectural details and a distinctive feature of the spring.
Toshmasjid is an architectural complex dating from the 16th century in the village of Vangoziy in Qiziltepa District. It includes a mosque, a minaret, a madrasa, a bathhouse and an old cemetery. The collection shows how different buildings and places of remembrance form part of a single complex.
The Rabati Malik caravanserai was built on the orders of the Karakhanid Shams-al-Mulk Nasr. In the broader destination of Uzbekistan, it is part of the Silk Roads: Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor. Raboti Malik is a ruin of an 11th-century caravanserai, located 23 kilometers from Navoiy. From the 13th century until the beginning of the 18th century, Raboti Malik served as a caravanserai for merchant caravans. Its patronage, construction history and long period of use offer different insights into the history of this structure.
Mountains and Transitional Landscapes
The Nurota Mountains consist of three low western spurs of the Gissar-Alai system. Their highest peak is Hayatbashi, at 2,169 meters. The range also lies in a transition zone between the Pamir-Alai and Tian Shan mountain systems and the desert plains of Turan. Its unique flora includes numerous endemic and relict species. The landscape can therefore be understood both in terms of its mountain structure and the transition between mountain systems and desert plains.
Aydarko‘l and Sentob
Aydarko‘l also offers a perspective on the region’s nature and geography. Its shoreline stretches from Nurota District in the Navoiy Region to the Forish and Mirzacho‘l districts in the Jizzax Region. The lake provides a refuge for birds listed in Uzbekistan’s Red Book. Ethnographic excursions take place at the yurt camps on Aydarko‘l. Nature and cultural excursions thus appeal to different interests.
