Itchan Kala was the last caravan stop before crossing the desert to Persia. The inner fortress of Khiva in Uzbekistan’s Khorezm Region contains 51 ancient monumental buildings and 250 residential houses. This allows visitors to take in not just a single building, but an entire historic urban landscape.
Khiva is more than 2,500 years old; the city’s puppet theater is conservatively estimated to be about 2,000 years old. These figures refer to different things, and the theater’s age remains an estimate. In Samarkand, too, the history of a city and archaeological traces lie side by side: the city in northeastern Uzbekistan is considered a crossroads of world cultures and has a history spanning more than two and a half millennia. Registan Square is one of the country’s world-famous architectural monuments. Afrosiab, the site of the ancient city north of Samarkand, is preserved as an archaeological reserve and is considered one of Central Asia’s most important archaeological sites.
City History and Museums
In Tashkent, visitors can explore history through a range of museum topics. The Islamic Civilization Center, which opened in March 2026, includes a museum with a Quran Hall where the Mushaf of Uthman is on display. Museums in Uzbekistan make millions of exhibits, spanning from ancient civilizations to the present day, accessible to the public; what each museum offers varies.
The State Museum of Nature of Uzbekistan in Tashkent organizes its flora and fauna exhibitions into four sections. Its exhibits include mammoth remains, as well as birds and animals that are threatened with extinction. The Museum of the Armed Forces presents military history from the Paleolithic to the 20th century. Another historical trace leads to the Ming-Urık settlement and its museum: both are under state protection.
At the Tashkent Railway Museum, visitors can explore the trains on their own or take a guided sightseeing train, during which the historic museum trains are explained in detail. Check the published opening hours before visiting. New Uzbekistan Park, in the suburbs of Tashkent, offers a different focus: its amenities include artificial lakes, playgrounds, cafés, restaurants and pavilions.
Deserts, Mountains and Changing Seasons
The Cold Winter Deserts of Turan form a transboundary desert region in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Uzbek portion includes South Ustyurt National Park and the Saigachy-Duana, Saigachy-Zhidely and Saigachy-Beleuli components. These components are managed by the Saigachy Landscape Reserve as a wilderness area. The region as a whole provides habitat for endangered mammals such as goitered gazelles, saigas and urials.
Chimgan offers a different landscape: birch and walnut groves, waterfalls, lakes and narrow gorges define the area. In the warmer part of the year, visitors can go paragliding or climb Big Chimgan. Conditions and providers may vary by season, so it is worth checking what is available for your planned dates. For winter sports, the Chimgan area has the Amirsoy, Beldersay and Chimgan ski resorts, with chairlifts and drag lifts; operations at individual resorts may change. For a hike through Gulkam Gorge, hire an experienced mountain guide who is familiar with safety matters. Local trail conditions may also change.
Silk Road Sites and Everyday Culture
In Uzbekistan, the Rabati Malik caravanserai is part of the Silk Roads: Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor. In the wider regional context, many sections of the corridor continue to be used for transport, as they were in the past. The Afrosiab high-speed train connects Tashkent and Samarkand. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable and service status.
Palov also speaks to shared everyday life: this traditional dish is prepared and eaten together in Uzbekistan’s rural and urban communities. The shared meal is therefore as much a part of its cultural significance as the dish itself.
