Junction combines river scenery with a tangible sense of local history: here, the South Llano River and North Llano River meet below the dam to form the Main Llano River. The water offers opportunities for paddling and fishing, while the museum, library and local traditions reveal another side of the town.
Rivers, Paddling and Time Outdoors
The South Llano Paddling Trail covers six miles on the spring-fed South Llano River. Along the route, you’ll find calm pools, rapids and flowing stretches. Junction City Park is designated as an access point for the trail. By contrast, if you’re planning a canoe trip on the Main Llano River, start below the dam at City/County Park. Check river conditions before setting out.
Schreiner Park, also known as Junction City Park, is within the city on the South River and has a boat ramp and swimming area. City Park is also home to the baskets of the Junction disc golf course along the Llano River. This gives you a range of water and park activities to consider when planning your trip, without confusing the South Llano Trail with the canoe trip on the Main Llano.
Fly fishing is also possible on the rivers that flow through Junction. Check the applicable regulations before fishing. In the wider Junction region, South Llano River State Park is designated as an International Dark Sky Park.
Local History and Culture
Junction was founded in the spring of 1876. The O.C. Fisher Museum is located in the Kimble County Library. The library’s O.C. Fisher Wing contains Congressman Fisher’s papers, furniture from his office in Washington, D.C., paintings and other memorabilia. Also in the library, Kimble Krafter’s Korner features a different local artist each month. Together, these spaces bring political history and changing local art together in one place.
Another sign of local continuity is Holekamp’s Junction Warehouse, which received the “Texas Treasure” designation. The award recognizes a business that has been operated by the same family at the same location for at least 75 years. The Junction Golf Course at the foot of Lovers Leap adds a long-standing sports facility to the picture: volunteers built the nine-hole course in 1927.
Events and Seasonal Dates
The Sunset Easter Event is held every year on the Saturday before Easter at the foot of Lovers Leap Hill. In the Easter Pageant in Junction, local amateur actors reenact the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Sunset Easter Event, check the date for the year in question.
The Summer Classic Rodeo Parade is held annually on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and starts at the intersection of 4th and Main Street. Holiday Lights on the Llano displays illuminated trees every year from November 1 to January 1 in Junction City Park on the banks of the Llano River; exact dates may vary. Both events give your stay a clear seasonal focus.
During growing seasons, the Farmers Market is held every Saturday on the lawn in front of the Kimble County Courthouse. As the market is seasonal, check the dates before your visit. Whether you’re considering Junction for its rivers, culture or a particular event date, these highlights can help you choose the right time to visit for your interests.
