Wetland landscapes, rivers, and historic sites offer different perspectives on South Carolina. The Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto Basin system is one of the largest remaining undeveloped wetland ecosystems on the Atlantic coast. In the Jocassee Gorges, numerous streams shape rugged gorges and create scenic waterfalls. The rare Oconee bells plant also gives this area its character: it is considered a signature species of the Jocassee Gorges.
Wetlands, Gorges, and Rivers
Another natural highlight is the Chattooga River in South Carolina: a free-flowing, 50-mile-long whitewater river with Class IV and V rapids. Conditions and permitted activities vary by section. Those interested in whitewater should therefore pay attention to the specific stretch of river.
The landscapes around Caesars Head and Jones Gap also offer a clear point of reference: Caesars Head is connected to Jones Gap State Park within the 17,000-acre Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. The Raven Cliff Falls Trail, a four-mile loop, is located in Caesars Head State Park. The park also offers the Hawk-Watch program every fall. If you’re traveling at that time of year, the seasonal program may be a useful planning reference.
History and Cultural Discoveries
The Grove House is the visitor station for the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. The building was constructed in 1828 as the mansion of a former rice plantation. Its current use as a visitor station and its former use tell two different chapters of its history.
Charles Towne Landing features a replica 17th-century trading ship called Adventure, an Animal Forest, and an interactive museum. These elements offer different points of interest: maritime history, the Animal Forest, and a hands-on museum. Individual exhibits may close for maintenance.
The Hunting Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after being destroyed during the Civil War. The lighthouse is currently open to the public; visitors can climb the 167 steps to the top. Check park conditions before your visit.
Fort Sumter is located in Charleston Harbor and is accessible only by boat. Its history also has a clear date: in 1948, after being transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service, the fort was designated a National Monument. Since operating details may vary seasonally, it’s a good idea to check the latest information before traveling.
Tours are offered at the South Carolina State House. Each tour begins with a 15-minute viewing of a DVD about the building’s history and architecture. If you’re planning a tour, check the current schedule in advance. Another cultural feature of the state is sweetgrass basket weaving, its official craft. Hoppin’ John, meanwhile, is a staple of Gullah cuisine.
Hikes with Different Profiles
At Table Rock State Park, the Carrick Creek Trail is a moderately challenging two-mile loop. The Table Rock Trail is a 3.6-mile route that climbs 2,000 feet to the summit of Table Rock Mountain. The route details differ not only in length: the elevation gain is also specified for the Table Rock Trail. This lets you compare the two hikes using concrete trail information. Temporary work may affect facilities.
Another option is the four-mile Raven Cliff Falls Trail loop in Caesars Head State Park. The three sets of figures—two miles for the moderately challenging Carrick Creek Trail, 3.6 miles and a 2,000-foot climb for the Table Rock Trail, and four miles for the Raven Cliff Falls Trail—provide different planning details.
