Newberry County can be explored through a range of contrasts: a distinctive opera house, lakes, forest parks and trails each offer a different side of a visit. The Newberry Opera House was inaugurated in 1882 and is the cultural heart of the county. For planning, it is worth considering experiences by theme: architecture and performances offer different perspectives from forest trails or activities on the water.
Opera House, Garden and Regional History
The Newberry Opera House is a distinctive example of Victorian eclectic civic architecture. It is crowned by a French Gothic-style clock tower—two different architectural features in one building. The venue hosts about 170 performances and other events each year, including chamber music, opera, dance, and concerts featuring country-western, big band and beach music. Check the current schedule before your trip if you want to plan your visit around a particular performance.
The Newberry Museum offers another perspective on the region’s cultural heritage. It preserves and shares the enduring history and cultural heritage of Newberry County and Newberry College. Wells Japanese Garden offers a different accent: the small landscaped park was privately established in 1930 and given to the city for public use in 1971. Native and exotic plants combine with Japanese architectural elements that frame and face two small ponds.
Lakes and Forest Trails
Lake Murray lies along Newberry County’s southern border and is a major recreational area in central South Carolina. Dreher Island State Park in Newberry County is also located on Lake Murray. It comprises three islands connected to the shore by a causeway and two bridges. At Lake Greenwood, options include boating, water skiing and fishing, as well as picnicking and camping.
Lynch's Woods Park brings together a forest setting and a challenging trail network. The park was established in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps; large pines and old-growth hardwood stands characterize its landscape. The 7.5 miles of hiking and biking trails include winding sections, short climbs and challenging stream crossings. There are also 6.1 miles of equestrian trails. The park is open from dawn until dark; the trails are open. A 0.2-mile ADA trail also runs through the front section of the park.
The Peak to Prosperity Passage runs through Newberry County past historic Peak and through Piedmont forest to Pomaria. Fourteen wooden bridges span the winding course of Crims Creek. This makes the route quite different from the trail options at Lynch's Woods Park: here, the bridges and the course of the creek are defining features of the route.
Festivals, Pottery and Tastings
Recurring events also provide a cultural backdrop for your stay. The South Carolina Clay Conference takes place annually in Newberry and is aimed at pottery enthusiasts; dates may change. The Little Mountain Reunion is an annual August folk festival in Little Mountain and is one of South Carolina’s oldest folk festivals. Its origins go back to an 1882 initiative associated with Newberry College to promote local alumni gatherings. Check the specific festival dates before your trip, as they may change.
Pork in the Park is an annual barbecue gathering held in Memorial Park, with live music, food, family-friendly offerings and activities for children. Dates and programs vary from year to year. At Carter and Holmes Orchids, you can enjoy the Orchid Safari: a tour through greenhouses featuring orchids and tropical plants at various stages of growth. Advance reservations are required for guided tours. Enoree River Vineyards & Winery offers a tasting experience with views of eight acres of vineyard; check seasonal opening hours before your visit.
