Some of the rice plantations in Jasper County are now part of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Located in the southern part of the county, the refuge combines opportunities to observe nature with a history that remains visible in the landscape. You can discover more chapters of the region’s past along the Savannah River and in the county’s collections. When planning your trip, you can focus on different interests: wildlife, habitats, history, or architecture.

Nature and Habitats

Wildlife viewing is possible along the 4-mile Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive in the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The same is true of the adjacent hiking and biking trails. You can experience the area along a designated driving route or on trails using other forms of transport; both offer a focus on wildlife viewing and the refuge.

The refuge’s 2024 visitor guide lists opening hours for the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and other areas as seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset, except in closed areas. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The Blue Heron Nature Center & Trail is located on 10 acres of green space at Exit 21 off I-95 in Ridgeland, South Carolina. The 4,200-square-foot education and nature center is housed in a log cabin. The site offers the opportunity to observe great blue herons, ospreys, alligators, and turtles in their natural habitat.

At Tillman Sand Ridge, the focus shifts more toward the habitat itself: this area in Jasper County provides a unique habitat for the endangered gopher tortoise. Wildlife trails through Tillman Sand Ridge may be open to experienced hikers with a permit. If you are considering a hike there, confirm whether access is currently possible before making plans.

History, Collections, and Architecture

Purrysburgh was founded in 1732 by Swiss-German immigrants led by Jean Pierre Purry on the Savannah River. A cross-shaped stone monument on the Savannah River marks the site of Purrysburg. At Honey Hill, attacks by U.S. Colored Troops on Confederate fortifications failed on November 30.

The Pauline Pratt Webel Museum is located at 403 Russell Street. Artifacts, prints, and other materials document the residents of Jasper County. The Church of the Holy Trinity is an outstanding architectural example of the Carpenter Gothic style. At the Morris Center, you can view current exhibitions independently and at your own pace, or arrange a guided tour.

On the Savannah River
