A former railroad depot, a former jail and buildings from the 1930s give Chester County a variety of historical highlights. Alongside them are nature trails, river landscapes and recurring events. Depending on your interests, you can plan a stay around history, scenery or a specific event.
History in Buildings and Collections
The Chester County Transportation Museum is housed in the former Seaboard Railroad depot, built in 1888. On display are a 1916 Ford and a 1921 LaFrance fire engine. The two vehicles draw attention to different subjects: the Ford represents motorized mobility, while the fire engine represents fire protection. Their dates also provide specific points of reference in time.
The Chester County Historical Society Museum and Archives tells a different story through its building: it is housed in a jail built in 1914. The archives include the Henry Orion Nichols Collection, with an estimated 250,000 images or more. Alongside individual historic vehicles, you’ll find an extensive image collection. The two museums offer different ways to explore history: through specific objects or through a large collection of images.
Trails, Landscapes and Activity
Chester State Park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Several buildings constructed by the CCC in the 1930s are still in use there. The park is situated on a 160-acre lake, which is surrounded by a two-mile nature trail through a pine forest. The landscape and architectural history sit side by side: the lake and trail shape the natural setting, while the buildings recall the work of the CCC.
The Woods Ferry Horse Trail offers a different scale. Its trail system is 26 miles long and open to horseback riders, hikers and mountain bikers. Compared with the two-mile nature trail around the lake, the main differences are the trail length and the explicitly stated uses. Woods Ferry Recreation Area is in Chester County, on the east bank of the Broad River.
The rivers also help orient you: the Broad River forms Chester County’s western boundary, while the Catawba River forms its eastern boundary. Located right along the I-77 corridor, the county also provides a clear reference point for planning your journey. For a different kind of activity, Skydive Carolina at Chester Catawba Airport offers a skydiving school, tandem jumps and programs for experienced jumpers.
Annual Events and Practical Information
Held annually in Great Falls, the Battle of Beckhamville Commemoration includes reenactments at the actual battlefield, at the intersection of S.C. Highways 97 and 99. Here, the location and historical event are directly connected. The Flopeye Fish Festival is Chester County’s longest-running festival. The annual HILLarity Festival in Chester takes place on the third weekend in October; the Arts Council of Chester County also hosts the Chester County Art Show every year.
For help planning your days and trip, the Chester County Visitor Center in downtown Chester provides maps and personalized assistance. You can use your interests—historic sites, outdoor trails or a particular event—as a starting point for planning your trip.
