Dillon County’s history comes especially alive when you focus on the city of Dillon: two historic districts there—one residential and one commercial—are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The historic commercial district is largely preserved, and the city invites you to take a walking tour. The commercial buildings have largely retained ornamental features dating from after 1903. Main Street United Methodist Church also offers a distinctive glimpse into the past, with architectural details from 1892.

Local History in Homes, Museums and on Stage

Another historic landmark is Dillon’s train depot. Reconstructed in 1905, it remains an active CSX and Amtrak depot. If you plan to make it a fixed stop on your trip, check current operations in advance.

The JW Dillon House was built in 1890, restored in the 1960s and moved to its present location. It is furnished as it would have been in the early 20th century; interpretations of the interior may change over time. The floor plan brings the house to life: the ground floor has a parlor, an office, a living room and a dining room, while the upper floor has five bedrooms.

The Dillon County Museum in Latta is housed in a restored former medical and dental office. The museum building was constructed in 1915. Exhibits include old dental and medical equipment, agricultural equipment, military memorabilia, indigo displays and other local historical objects. Here, different aspects of local history come together—from medicine and agriculture to military memories. Since exhibits may change, if you have a particular interest, it is worth checking what is currently on display.

The renovated Dillon County Theatre, home of the MacArthur Avenue Players, offers another kind of cultural experience. The group stages a variety of plays each year. The theater also hosts concerts, competitions and other events; check the dates if you want to combine your visit with an event, as the program may change.

Swamp, Lake and Hiking Trails

The Little Pee Dee State Park centers on its waterscapes and geological features. Visitors can explore the swamp of the Little Pee Dee River and see a Carolina bay—a geological depression unique to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The park is also home to 54-acre Lake Norton, where bream, bass and catfish are found. Here, you can discover different natural features side by side: the swamp landscape, the distinctive shape of the Carolina bay and a lake with several fish species.

There is also a specific way to get out on the water: you can rent canoes and kayaks, including life jackets and paddles, in the park. Rental availability may vary by season, so it is advisable to check before making plans.

The two trails described here differ mainly in length and route, making them suitable for a walk or hike. The easy Beaver Pond Nature Trail is 1.5 miles long and follows an out-and-back route with a loop at one end. The equally easy Longleaf Pine Trail is 2.1 miles long; its out-and-back route passes through a longleaf pine forest. You can choose between a shorter route with a loop and a longer trail through a pine forest. Trail details and conditions may change; check them before setting out.
