Walker County offers a wide range of discoveries: rock gardens, nature trails, and historic buildings. Rock City Gardens combines a natural rock garden with landscaped scenes. Perched atop Lookout Mountain, it spans 14 acres and features four self-guided trails. More than 400 native plant species grow in the gardens; from Lover’s Leap, views stretch across seven different states. Fairyland Caverns features scenes from fairy tales, while Mother Goose Village brings scenes from nursery rhymes to life. Botanical diversity, scenic views, and staged stories all come together at Rock City.
Rocks, Trails, and Water
Rocktown offers rock climbing and bouldering opportunities for beginners and experienced climbers alike. The rocks are generally between 30 and 40 feet high. Blue Hole is a clear spring just a short distance from a parking area on Blue Hole Road. Lula Lake Land Trust offers opportunities for hiking, biking on some trails, and visiting a scenic waterfall. Lula Falls is 120 feet high and about a 30-minute walk from the entrance to the central preserve.
Chickamauga Battlefield also combines landscape and activity: this historic landmark covers 5,300 acres and features 50 miles of hiking trails. Bicycles are allowed on all paved roads; horseback riding is permitted on the Red, White, and Blue trails. Trail conditions and use rules may change, so check them before your visit.

History in Buildings and Landscapes
The John Ross House is the oldest surviving structure in northwest Georgia. Built around 1797, it later served as a U.S. post office and was used as a hospital during the Civil War. The Chattooga Academy is considered one of Georgia’s oldest school buildings. From September 10 to 17, 1863, it served as the headquarters of Confederate General Braxton Bragg. Construction of the Gordon Lee Mansion began in 1840 and was completed seven years later. Shortly before the Battle of Chickamauga, the house served as General Rosecrans’s headquarters; during the battle, it was a hospital. Its varied uses ranged from a post office to military headquarters and hospitals.
The Coke Ovens tell the story of another era: in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coal was converted there into coke for iron and steel foundries. Every September, the Coke Ovens host an Arts & Crafts Festival. Check the dates for the relevant year before your trip. McLemore Cove is known for its scenic beauty, Antebellum buildings, and extensive farmland.

John’s Mountain is a 24,849-acre area in Walker County. Hikers can explore the Keown Falls Trail there. The 9-mile-long The Pocket trail features several wildlife openings and a camping area and leads to High Point, the highest point on Pigeon Mountain. For off-road riding, Houston Valley OHV Area offers 25 miles of trails across about 2,600 acres.
