The Historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway gives Effingham County a clear narrative route: a 60-mile drive along state and local roads through Ebenezer, Guyton, Springfield, and Rincon. The starting point is on Fourth Street at the viaduct. From I-95, reach it via Exit 109 and GA Highway 21 through Rincon. The route offers a practical guide between four towns and highlights different sides of the county.

River Landscapes and Outdoor Trails

Ebenezer Creek is a tributary of the Savannah River. Its banks are lined with pristine bottomland forests of bald cypress and water tupelo trees. The creek is designated a Georgia Scenic River and a National Natural Landmark. Several launch sites and boat ramps provide access to Ebenezer Creek, making access to the water, along with the forest landscape, one of the county’s defining natural features.

Another focus is on trails and recreation: TREC Trail is a public trail system in Effingham County that provides recreational opportunities. In contrast to the river and bottomland forest landscape, the trail network takes center stage here. The Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center is also in the county and encompasses 3,200 acres of managed forest. It is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit. TREC Trail and the Forest Education Center thus offer different points of interest for travelers interested in trails, forests, and nature.

Traces of History

The historic settlements represent different motivations. Ebenezer was founded in 1734 as a military defense outpost for Savannah. New Ebenezer was established in 1736 by Lutheran Salzburgers seeking a place of religious freedom. Ebenezer became Georgia’s first capital. These milestones give local history a prominent place in the county’s story, without reducing its historical themes to a single motivation.

In Ebenezer, the congregation of Jerusalem Lutheran Church welcomes visitors. The church is the oldest Lutheran church in America in continuous use for worship. It was built of bricks made from local clay between 1767 and 1769; its walls are 21 inches thick. The construction period, locally sourced brick, and unusual wall thickness offer a tangible architectural window into history. In Springfield, the Effingham Historic Society Museum and Living History Site displays historic artifacts that tell the story of Effingham County.

Music, Stage, and Film in Springfield

The Mars Theatre opened in Springfield in 1945. Today, it hosts concerts and offers live music; it also regularly screens current film premieres and popular classics. Springfield’s cultural offerings therefore include both stage music and a changing film program. If you’re planning your visit around a performance, check the schedule for your travel dates.
