In Bronwood stands the Bronwood Calaboose, a small wooden jail dating from around the turn of the century, with two cells. It is the only surviving evidence of Bronwood’s historic municipal law enforcement. In Terrell County, tracing the past leads from this single structure to places on a very different scale: historic districts, a courthouse, and a church with a long history.

One County, Two Sub-basins

The division of the waterways also draws a clear distinction. The western and southern two-thirds of Terrell County lie in the Ichawaynochaway Creek sub-basin, within the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin). The northeastern third belongs to the Kinchafoonee-Muckalee sub-basin. Both sub-basins are part of the same larger ACF River Basin. This makes it possible to place the county’s different areas geographically without viewing them as separate river systems.

History in Individual Buildings and Entire Districts

During the American Civil War, Fosterville was established in Terrell County as a refuge for civilians forced to flee the city after Union troops captured Atlanta. The settlement was named after Ira Roe Foster, Georgia’s quartermaster general. This story connects the place to a specific period and a particular purpose.

In Dawson, the Terrell County Courthouse stands in the heart of downtown; its style is High Victorian. A historic marker at the courthouse commemorates the Battle of Echo-wa-noth-away Swamp during the Creek War of 1836. The Dawson Carnegie Library is also part of the area’s architectural history: it was completed in 1914 and was called the Dawson Library. The Terrell County Historic Preservation Society rents it out for community events.

When it comes to historic listings, it is important to distinguish between individual buildings and an entire district. The Garden Club House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dawson Historic District, in turn, includes commercial, residential, industrial, community, and transportation-related buildings in downtown, constructed from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. It qualifies for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A; its significance lies in the agricultural, economic, industrial, developmental, governmental, and transportation history of Dawson and Terrell County.

Another facet of local history can be found in Parrott. This small rural town lies in northern Terrell County in southwest Georgia and is surrounded by farmland. The Parrott Historic District includes intact historic homes with outbuildings and associated fields, commercial buildings, as well as community buildings and landmarks. It also includes three cemeteries and industrial resources dating from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Georgia Highway 520, or Highway 55, runs north to south through the district.

The Chickasawhatchee Primitive Baptist Church is also part of the county’s history. Built in 1858, it is the oldest church in Terrell County still standing at its original location. Together with the Calaboose in Bronwood, it shows the variety of surviving evidence: from municipal law enforcement to a church whose location itself is part of its historic context.

Events and Cultural Experiences

The annual Tour of Homes gives the public a chance to see the interiors of antebellum and Victorian homes in Dawson. If you would like to include this opportunity in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance. The Terrell County Historic Preservation Society’s Fall Festival features local vendors and entertainment. At the Progressive Dinner, hosts serve different courses in their homes throughout the evening.

Contemporary offerings also complement the historical themes: the Main Street Theatre & Cultural Arts Center has a theater auditorium with seating. The Terrell County Recreation Department offers a variety of sports activities for the whole family; specific sports dates may vary. The options therefore range from architecture and local history to events and sports. You can choose what to focus on based on which side of Terrell County you would like to explore further.
