Sorengo brings together natural landscapes around Colle and Via Laghetto, the Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta, and recurring festivals. Its links to the surrounding landscape, sacred art, and events offer different considerations when planning a stay.
Natural surroundings at Colle and Laghetto
A wildlife corridor runs along Via Laghetto between the forest on Colle and the Laghetto di Muzzano nature reserve. Colle di Sorengo is also home to small animals such as squirrels, birds, foxes, badgers, snakes, and toads. These two features give Sorengo’s natural character a tangible form, but from different perspectives: the corridor describes a connection between two natural areas, while the list of animals describes the habitat on Colle. If nature is an important factor in choosing a destination, this distinction helps you consider landscape connectivity and wildlife as two aspects of Sorengo.
Church and local history
The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta combines a Romanesque nave structure with specific works of art. The nave is the elongated main space of the church building. On the exterior, two frescoes depicting Saint Francis and Saint Bonaventure can be seen. The marble high altar is a work by G. B. Adami of Carona, dating from 1735. The nave’s architecture, figurative painting on the exterior, and a dated altar piece thus stand alongside one another as distinct aspects of the church building.
The building dates from around the end of the 11th century; it was extended between 1566 and 1593, rebuilt several times, and renovated in 1975–1976. This brings together an early period of construction, dated approximately, and specific later interventions. Two dates in Sorengo’s history should also be distinguished: Sorengo was first mentioned as an independent municipality in 1298; in 1776, it became independent from Lugano as a parish in its own right. The first date concerns the municipality, the second its ecclesiastical independence. The municipality and the parish thus represent different aspects of local history.
Festivals and events
The Feste campestri take place every summer in Sorengo’s sports park. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular edition, check its date before booking. The Festa dell'uva is a public event that does not require registration. Volunteers from the Tiranocc group prepare delicacies for the festival every year.
The 13th edition of Lugano PasSteggia was scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026; its route was to pass through Sorengo as well. It was approximately 10 kilometres long. Stops for sampling local specialities and typical products were planned along the route. Free use of public transport to reach Lugano was also included for registered participants. This information relates to the 2026 edition.
