Massagno is in Switzerland, in the Lugano District of the Canton of Ticino. The municipality is almost entirely hilly: elevations range from 321 metres above sea level at La Punta to the summit of the Praccio hill at 439 metres. A stay here brings together a variety of themes, including sacred art and film, sports facilities and public green spaces.

Churches, art and film

The communities of Massagno and Gerso have medieval origins; Massagno is first mentioned around the year 1000. The present-day religious buildings reflect different periods: the Chiesa di Santa Lucia dates from 1931, the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio di Gerso from 1670, and the Chiesa della Madonna della Salute from 1729. The chapel known as “in selva” is one of the oldest wayside chapels in Ticino. Its frescoes date from the late 15th and early 19th centuries—two periods separated by a considerable span of time.

The historic centre also has its own story of development: it grew around the intersection of the road now called Via del San Gottardo and the path known as “streccion”. Religious life today includes a range of observances. The penitential novena to the Madonna della Salute is still held every year on nine consecutive cold mornings in January. During the winter months, the Greek Orthodox parish of Lugano celebrates the Divine Liturgy once a month at the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio di Gerso on Via Selva. Check service times before visiting.

For art lovers, Massagno brings together works in several locations and an ongoing cultural programme. Since 2008, the municipality has organised an annual art exhibition at Casa Pasquée, which is also home to Remo Rossi’s 1955 bronze sculpture “L’acrobata a cavallo”. Another bronze sculpture by the artist, “un giocoliere”, was also created in 1955 and is located by the Scuole Medie on Via Cabione. The chapel at the Girasole retirement home features an 18th-century stained-glass window depicting the Saviour.

Cinema LUX art house opened on 20 December 1958. It is owned by the municipality and privately operated, showing art-house and auteur films; its cultural programme continues today. The Studios section based there produces films and documentaries, with a particular focus on emerging young filmmakers and social issues relating to the area. The film programme and film production thus offer two distinct cultural experiences.

Swimming and sport at the Centro sportivo Valgersa

The Centro sportivo Valgersa brings together several pools and sports areas. There is a pool for swimmers, a non-swimmer pool with a depth of 60 to 120 centimetres, and a pool for small children. The facility can accommodate 800 to 1,000 people. The aquatic area also includes a 23-metre multi-lane waterslide. For breaks or activities away from the water, there is a beach volleyball court, a table tennis table, a reading corner and a picnic area.

The wider range of facilities extends from football to athletics. The hybrid-grass football pitch measures 92 × 60 metres and is approved for matches up to the Second League. There are also areas for archery and shot put. The athletics facilities include a 346-metre circular track with two lanes, a 100-metre straight with eight lanes, and facilities for high jump, long jump and triple jump. Visitors can explore the sports centre according to their interests, whether through its pools, ball and throwing sports, or athletics.

Green spaces, routes and getting around

Massagno has public green spaces, playgrounds and public gardens where families and children can spend time outdoors. Parco Ippocastano can be accessed via Via Sindacatori and Via Madonna della Salute. Parco Tre Pini is in the hilly area of Praccio. These named places add to the range of public open spaces, without implying that they all have the same features.

Local transport options are also useful for getting around. The Trasporti Pubblici Luganesi (TPL) and Autolinee regionali luganesi (ARL) routes run through the municipality. Lugano railway station and the funicular are very close to the centre of Massagno; the funicular provides an easy way to reach the centre of Lugano. A PubliBike self-service station with conventional and electric bikes is located on Via dei Platani, near Cinema LUX.

The road network is about 13 kilometres long and includes several stairways and pedestrian streets. Together with the almost entirely hilly terrain, this is useful context for planning your own routes, without suggesting a specific walking time. Nearby places include Lugano, Viganello and Pregassona.
