Vezia can be explored through several distinct themes: its historic village centre preserves echoes of its rural past, while oratories, landscaped gardens and protected natural areas each offer their own highlights. Other attractions include a fairy-tale project with audio elements, local produce and a running route towards Capriasca. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus mainly on architectural and church history, garden design, nature or exercise.
Village Centre, Villa and Garden Design
The houses stand close together in the historic village centre, still conveying distant echoes of its rural past. The area also includes the birthplace of Padre Agostino Daldini. Its façade is decorated with mosaics by Raffaello Somazzi depicting the four Evangelists. The building’s details thus connect a specific place with Daldini’s life and a visual representation of the Gospels.
Another historic landmark is Villa Negroni-Prati, formerly Villa Morosini. It was built around the mid-18th century and has been home to the Centro di Studi Bancari since 1989. The park’s name points to another aspect of local garden design: Parco di Villa Negroni combines a formal Italian-style parterre with a larger English-style area. The formal garden features clipped box hedges, a tufa grotto, fountains, statues and wrought-iron decorations. It is considered one of the few formally designed Italian-style gardens in Ticino. The park is open year-round and free to enter.
Oratories and Local Traditions
The Oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie stands on a hill in Vezia and can be reached via a distinctive Romanesque path through an area characterised by chestnut trees. Its building history spans a presumed Carolingian foundation, a Romanesque oratory and the present-day late Baroque building. The Oratorio and its associated chaplain’s house are protected cultural property owned by the Patriziato di Vezia. These historical layers can be distinguished: the presumed foundation, the Romanesque phase and the late Baroque form refer to different periods, not to a single building event.
The Oratorio di San Martino houses a 16th-century image of the Madonna with Leonardesque features. The hill near the oratory is also associated with fortifications and possible medieval castle ruins; visible traces are said to remain near the summit. This interpretation is tentative: it refers to possible ruins and to traditional accounts and archaeological evidence. In 2022, the Patriziato and the municipality’s cultural department established a traditional nighttime torchlight procession to San Martino. It takes place on the Friday after St Martin’s Day, and children from the primary schools make their own lanterns. If you plan to attend the procession, check the local announcement for the date.
The Oasi delle fiabe adds audio fairy tales to the cultural walk. They were created in collaboration with RSI – Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana and the Museo cantonale di storia naturale. There are two information panels: one by the primary school and the other at the entrance to the Bolle di San Martino. Use the QR code to choose one or more stories. Check on site whether the signs are still there and usable.
Protected Nature and Outdoor Activities
The Bolle di San Martino is a marshland site of national importance and is covered by a cantonal protection plan. This gives Vezia a nature attraction distinct from its landscaped gardens: here, the focus is on protected marshland, while the formal Italian parterre and English-style garden area showcase deliberately designed landscapes. Parco Morosini has been renovated and opened to the public. As specific access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.
If you are looking for a running route, there is a clearly described starting point: the Capriasca route, described by Lugano Region, starts in Vezia and heads towards the Capriasca area. It passes through the Monte San Rocco woodland and across the fields of Monda–Porza, mostly on paved roads. The route and surface conditions may change, so check the latest downloadable track before setting out. Another local facility is the Centro Sportivo La Monda, in a rural setting. Its impressive plane trees provide shade; the sports centre is used by clubs, businesses and families.
Local Produce and Getting Around
A municipal report from 2025 describes a weekly Wednesday morning market in Vezia selling local produce. It lists either Via San Gottardo or the portico of the Centro civico as the location. If you plan to visit the market, check in advance which location is currently in use. The 2025 report also mentions sales by Fondazione OTAF at Masseria Gerbone, offering honey, jams, eggs, and locally grown fruit and vegetables. Check the current arrangements for sales in advance. The vineyards of Tenuta Bally & von Teufenstein cover 6.5 hectares, where the winery produces local wines.
For getting around, TPL route 5 provides a useful point of reference: it runs between Manno, Lamone, Vezia, Lugano Centro and Viganello. Check the latest timetable for your travel date. Together, the market, vineyards, cultural heritage and protected landscape offer a range of ways to spend time here, without needing to combine them into a set itinerary.
