Roveredo looks south and sits like a balcony above Lake Lugano. Here, visible traces of the village’s history meet trails into the Monti and a hiking route over Monte Bar.

Village history and the Monti

From 1803 to 2001, Roveredo was a municipality in the canton of Ticino for almost 200 years. Covering less than one square kilometre, it was one of the smallest municipalities. The area also includes the Monti, a significant zone with houses at elevations of 800 to 1,000 metres. These houses once served as summer residences; livestock were taken there to graze and hay was made. This former seasonal use is part of the place’s history, while the elevation provides a specific reference point for the Monti.

Historical traces can also be seen in the village: remnants of the old municipal aqueduct have been preserved along the streets. The portal lintel of the Church of San Bernardo abate bears the year 1448. These details can be considered independently—as visible evidence in the village’s historic fabric.

Ernest Bloch and sacred architectural history

The composer Ernest Bloch lived in Roveredo from 1930 to 1934. During those four years, he used his retreat in particular to compose his best-known work, the “Servizio sacro ebraico.” The connection between a specific place and a clearly defined period in his life gives Roveredo’s cultural history a personal dimension.

The documented history of the Oratorio di San Bernardo da Chiaravalle reaches further back: its first recorded inspection took place on 2 September 1567. A historical description from the same year mentions frescoes of the Madonna, God the Father and the four Evangelists. A report from 1719 records a rebuilding of the Oratorio. These details refer to different historical milestones and preserve their chronological sequence.

Among the stone features in the village centre is La Fanciüra: a slab measuring 115 × 85 × 15 centimetres, with nine cup marks, two crosses and two other symbols. Beside a wayside chapel is a Type B mortar stone used as a fountain. Its basin has a diameter of 35 centimetres; at the rim are two depressions, a cup mark and a groove. The slab and the fountain stone have different forms and features.

Audiovisual Archive in Roveredo

The Archivio Audiovisivo di Capriasca e Val Colla is based in Roveredo. It collects, preserves and shares images and oral accounts that form the region’s collective memory. The municipal building houses an exhibition space featuring regional images and audio excerpts from recorded interviews. At the Roveredo exhibition site, you can also consult the complete catalogued photo archive. Guided tours of the exhibition are available by appointment; arrange a time before your arrival.

Hiking over Monte Bar

The official “Il sentiero panoramico” hiking route links Corticiasca, Monte Bar and Roveredo. Monte Bar is the highest point on the route, offering 360-degree views across the region. Heading towards the Monti di Roveredo, the trail descends, first across pastures and then through settlements with distinctive Rustici. The route thus moves from panoramic views at Monte Bar to a descent through pastures and settlements with distinctive Rustici towards the Monti di Roveredo.

A shorter option is available via the forest track between Capanna Monte Bar and Motto della Croce. Separately, the SAC archive record rates the approach to Motto della Croce via the Monti di Roveredo as “EE.” This rating applies to the specified approach and not generally to the entire panoramic route.

Capanna La Ginestra is located in the Lusciana area of the Monti di Roveredo and can only be reached on foot from Roveredo, in about 45 minutes. Check access information before setting out. From the Capanna, the view extends to the mountains Tamaro, Gradiccioli and Lema, the Vedeggio Valley, the city of Lugano and Lake Lugano.

A regional route with food stops

The “Via dei Sapori” in Capriasca is a 38.37-kilometre route with stops at farms, agriturismi, a cheese dairy and a restaurant. Roveredo is its fourth stop; the tourism map indicates a walking time of one hour from Tesserete. This route complements the cultural and hiking options with a regional perspective on agriculture and gastronomy.
