Church art across the centuries

Sonvico’s historic town centre has a well-preserved medieval layout. Its churches reveal different periods in time: from Romanesque origins and 11th-century frescoes to paintings from the 15th and 17th centuries.

The Oratorio di San Martino has Romanesque origins and is a rare example south of the Alps of a church built of wood. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista brings together a long architectural and ecclesiastical history: its original structure dates to 1375; in 1419 it became an independent parish. The counter-façade features 15th-century paintings of saints and a Madonna enthroned. Paintings by Gian Domenico Caresana from 1614 depict episodes from the life of John the Baptist.

The Chiesa di San Nazario is in the hamlet of Dino. Its nave contains Romanesque frescoes from the 11th century. The church also preserves a detached fresco by Bernardino Luini depicting the Crucifixion, created around 1529. The different works give Sonvico’s church art a broad chronological range, without confining individual periods to a single building.

Walnut culture and historic houses

The Casa del torchio was restored in the 1980s and converted into a small cultural centre run by the Amici del Torchio association. The Piemontese lever press there, the Torchio delle noci, is among the oldest surviving presses of its kind in Ticino. The year 1582 is engraved on its main beam, which is 10 metres long and weighs 5,000 kilograms. In addition to walnuts, the press is said to have been used to press grape pomace. The permanent exhibition The walnut and its tree highlights the area’s close connection with the walnut and walnut tree. If you are planning a visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Casa della Ragione stands in Sonvico’s main square. The building is said to date from the 17th century; its elaborately decorated façade probably dates from around the mid-18th century. It displays the coats of arms of the twelve cantons, each accompanied by a scroll bearing the canton’s name and the year it joined the Confederation. Three iron hooks with animal heads have also been preserved on the façade. According to oral tradition, they are associated with the public pillory.

Trails, elevation and getting there

The Sentiero storico naturalistico di Sonvico is divided according to the four elements Acqua, Fuoco, Terra e Cielo; numbered information boards mark the observation points. The trail is considered easy and is also suitable for families. It offers a different perspective from the churches and historic buildings in the village.

On the fourth stage of the Lugano Gravel Bike Tour from Tesserete to Cadro/Lugano, the route runs from Madonna d’Arla to Sonvico along an unpaved road. Check the route and surface conditions before setting out. In the area around Sonvico, a cycle route leads from Madonna d’Arla to Monte Roveraccio. There, cyclists may encounter Scottish cattle grazing in the fields and reach a viewpoint with a 360-degree panorama. Conditions in the area may vary by season.

Capanna Pairolo is on the territory of the Patriziato di Sonvico, at an altitude of 1,344 metres in Val d’Usin, in the upper Franscinone valley. It is about a two-hour walk from Sonvico. Alongside local history and art, there are trails to explore at different spatial and temporal scales.
