Carabietta brings together several distinct features: the building history of the Chiesa di S. Bernardo, frescoes on historic courtyards and a municipal pontoon for private boats. The history of the village and its connection with Collina d'Oro also give your trip a tangible framework.

Carabietta is a district of Collina d'Oro in the Lugano district of the Canton of Ticino. Carabietta was established as an independent municipality in 1816; it was incorporated into Collina d'Oro on 1 April 2012. Its current status and its time as a municipality are therefore two distinct chapters in the village's history.

Church Art and Building History

The Chiesa di S. Bernardo has several construction phases: its origins date back to the 16th century, while the current building dates from the 17th century. The façade, with pilasters and a pediment, was built in the 18th century. This sequence of dates can be traced in different parts of the church.

Inside, the continuous cornice is supported by pilasters in the Ionic style. The choir contains frescoes framed by stucco: they depict Saint Bernard and the Madonna, Saint Roch among plague victims, and an Annunciation scene. The sacristy contains two further art-historical details: a fragment of an original late-medieval chapel and 16th-century frescoes in the style of Luini. Their subjects include the Crucifixion and the Madonna with Saints Michael and Bernard.

The Oratorio di San Bernardo on Via alla Chiesa is listed in the Cantonal Inventory of Ticino, as of 1 January 2026, as a protected cultural asset in Category B. It was restored in 2017. The inventory listing and the restoration describe different aspects: its protected status and a specific year of restoration.

Frescoes and Façades in the Corti

The entrance to the Corte dei Giorgetti is on Via Municipio. A fresco from the 16th century depicting the Madonna and Child enthroned stands above the first entrance arch. Another portal, at the corner of two residential buildings, features a fresco of a rural scene and a 17th-century stucco frame. The religious image on the entrance arch and the rural scene on the portal are distinct subjects at the same named location.

The Corte dei Frasca is a traditional building between Via Bassino and Via alla Chiesa. Its characteristic façades are made of exposed stone. The upper section of the west façade features a five-part arched loggia supported by pillars. A painting is also mounted on the wall beside the distinctive external service staircase; it is not in optimal condition.

Getting There and the Municipal Pontoon

Auto-Postale route 443 runs from Lugano to Agnuzzo via Grancia and Carabietta. Check the operator's current timetable before travelling so you can plan your journey for your chosen day.

The Porto di Carabietta is a municipal floating pontoon for mooring private boats. It has 24 berths: 18 are intended for boats up to 6.50 metres long, and six for boats up to 8.00 metres. This breakdown makes the two length categories available easy to identify.

Carnival, Food and Routes in Collina d'Oro

The traditional Carabietta Carnival is organised by the Stangon de Carabieta society. At the 2023 and 2025 editions, risotto with Luganighe was served at 12:30 pm; the time and menu may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to include the Carnival in your plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

In Agra, Grotto Posmonte serves traditional dishes in peaceful surroundings in the Collina d'Oro woods. The menu includes meat, cured meats and cheeses from small producers, as well as three risottos, including risotto with Zincarlin from the Valle di Muggio. It also features grilled dishes, polenta and brasato, along with homemade desserts and a selection of wines.

Collina d'Oro offers around 30 kilometres of routes through green spaces; most municipal routes run outside built-up areas. The fitness trail in Bigogno/Posmonte in Collina d'Oro is 3.6 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 120 metres. The first figure describes the extent of routes across the municipality, while the second gives the dimensions of a single fitness trail.
