A medieval signal tower on a rocky outcrop at the entrance to Val Traversagna offers panoramic views over a large part of the valley. There are also churches, mountain trails and Roveredo’s grotti. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can plan your stay around what you would like to focus on: local history, trails in the highlands, or regional produce and wine.

Roveredo in the Misox: scenery and getting there

Roveredo stretches from the valley floor of the Moesa at 298 m above sea level across wooded slopes. A large part of the municipality consists of woodland or alpine pasture. The climate is mild, with warm summers and temperate winters, and the landscape is varied. Roveredo has an Italian-speaking character and a rural feel. Regional bus routes connect the village with Bellinzona, Grono and other places in the Misox. The nearby A13 motorway provides road connections towards Chur and Ticino.

Tower, churches and bridges

The Torre di Boggiano is a medieval signal tower at the entrance to Val Traversagna. The remains include a square, four-storey tower and the ruins of a perimeter wall, suggesting a fortified complex. The rocky outcrop offers panoramic views over a large part of the valley.

Roveredo has four churches, which, as historical and cultural landmarks, are open to believers and non-believers alike. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giulio has Romanesque origins and was first mentioned in historical documents in 1219. Its choir dates from the early 14th century, and its bell tower from 1430. At the entrance to Val Traversagna stands the Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte Chiuso o di Sant’Anna. Two stone arch bridges cross the river of the same name in front of the church.

Hikes and routes into the highlands

There are mountain trails on Monte Laura, a mountain regarded as an ideal destination for hikers and mountain enthusiasts. The “Monti Laura – Roveredo (GR)” route starts in Roveredo, climbs to the Monti di Laura and offers panoramic views over the Mesolcina. In Roveredo and the surrounding region, the choice of hikes ranges from easy walks to challenging tours. A mountain biking route also starts in Roveredo and leads through an impressive forest into the highlands of Giova.

Another trail tells the story of the “Bocchetta di Camedo – le vie del Viandante” route. It starts in the San Fedele area and climbs to the Italian border. Historically, herders and hunters used this route; later, smugglers used it to travel across the border to Roveredo. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season; check current conditions before setting out.

Grotti, regional produce and Carnevale

The grotti in the San Fedee area are considered shady rest spots after mountain hikes. Visitors can sample local wines and authentic regional produce there. The car park in the San Fedee area is at the foot of the mountain and close to the grotti; it is available to visitors. Check the applicable parking regulations before using it.

Grotto Zendralli offers a welcoming, traditional atmosphere both indoors and outdoors. Its spaces are suitable for meals and banquets. Check opening details and availability if you are planning a specific visit.

Carnevale Lingera has been celebrated in Roveredo for many years. According to tourist information, it is one of the most significant carnival events in Italian-speaking Switzerland. Check the specific festival dates for your travel period.
