San Bernardino combines winter ski slopes and cross-country trails with moorlands, lakes and a history as a spa resort. When planning your stay, the time of year is a good place to start: in winter, skiing and cross-country skiing take centre stage; at other times, walks, hikes and the history of the village come more to the fore. The holiday resort on Lago d’Isola combines an alpine atmosphere with a Mediterranean way of life.

Skiing and cross-country skiing in winter

The Confin ski area has 35 kilometres of pistes, ranging from gentle slopes to the black Al Mur run. The highest point is 2,525 m above sea level. Pian Cales offers a different focus: the area is located at 1,600 m above sea level in the heart of San Bernardino and has five kilometres of easy ski runs. When comparing the options, you can take piste length, elevation and the stated difficulty grades into account.

The cross-country ski trails also vary in length and difficulty. The moderately difficult Pista Diga is six kilometres long; snow conditions and grooming may vary. The easy Pista Fornas is 1.9 kilometres long and can also be used at night, depending on the winter programme. The Pista Pian Doss cross-country route starts at the southern edge of the village and leads through a fir forest almost all the way up to Alp de Pian Doss. This alp is known for its local specialities and alpine panorama.

There are cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails around the village and Lago d’Isola in winter. The Centro Nordico offers cross-country skiers showers, changing rooms, toilets and a waxing room; its facilities may vary by season. The winter activities also include an artificial ice rink, where you can skate, as well as the chance to watch ice hockey games or try curling. Check the current operating conditions for seasonal activities before you travel.

Moorlands, lakes and trails

Pine forests, moorlands and a rich variety of flora are among the defining features of San Bernardino’s landscape. South of the village is the Suossa raised bog, which is listed in the Inventory of Raised Bogs of National Importance. The Furestin route reaches the bog after a short ascent on foot or with snowshoes. The pyramid-shaped Pizzo Uccello is considered a landmark of San Bernardino.

Lago Doss reveals a different side of the landscape: it is a small post-glacial moor lake in a peat hollow, surrounded by mountain forest. Activities on the lake include kayaking. At Lago d’Isola, you can go for walks in summer and cross-country skiing in winter; the alpine lake also offers opportunities for water sports. The two lakes therefore differ both in their landscapes and in the activities mentioned.

Hiking and mountain biking routes of varying difficulty lead from San Bernardino through nature to lakes and mountain restaurants. Information about each route can help you decide on a specific hike. The five-kilometre Passo San Bernardino – Strada romana route is moderately difficult, involves an ascent of 498 metres and reaches 2,107 m above sea level. It follows an old road paved with Roman cobblestones up to the pass. A much longer hike is the 17.5-kilometre San Bernardino – Val Curciusa – Nufenen route, whose highest point is 2,419 m above sea level; at the start, it climbs steeply towards Bocchetta de Curciusa, at around 2,420 m above sea level.

There is also a specific route option for mountain biking: the Isola San Bernardino tour starts on the banks of the Moesa, passes through the Bosch de San Remo forest and reaches Lago d’Isola. When choosing between hiking and cycling, you can refer to the respective route descriptions and, for hiking trails, the stated distances and elevation gains.

Mineral springs and local history

The mineral springs of San Bernardino emerge at 1,795 m above sea level. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the mineral spring became particularly well known for Acuforta, a treatment using iron-rich water. Visitors from nearby Italy were drawn by the therapeutic mineral waters, and San Bernardino developed into a recognised spa resort. This history describes the springs’ former significance.

The Chiesa Rotonda, San Bernardino’s main church, stands in the centre of the village. It was built between 1867 and 1897 on the commission of Milanese architect Gloria and follows the design of the round church of San Bernardino. East of the village, on a hill above the Chiesa Rotonda, stands the Chiesetta di San Bernardino, also known as the Chiesetta antica di San Bernardino da Siena. Dedicated to Saints Bernardino and Sebastian, it is situated at 1,630 m above sea level and was built between 1450 and 1467.

Another way to discover San Bernardino is Sato Code, an outdoor escape-room experience featuring clues, puzzles and various challenges around the village. Possible clue locations include the Chiesa Rotonda, a stone bridge and a snowy forest path. As details of the activity may change, check the current format in advance.

Getting there and planning by season
