Lostallo is a village and political municipality in the Italian-speaking part of the Swiss canton of Graubünden, in the Moesa region. Churches and rural heritage, landscape features, and routes with different itineraries give the area several distinct points of interest. If you are looking for hotels in Lostallo, you can tailor your stay to your interests: historic heritage, landscape or a particular type of route. The differences between a loop, a stage and a mountain bike route can help you choose what to explore on your trip.

Churches and Rural Heritage

In the village of Campagna de Cabiè, the group known as i Stall de Cabiè comprises thirteen rural buildings of historic, cultural and landscape value. It has been included in the national inventory of protected sites with the highest classification. This means that, alongside individual churches, a group of rural buildings is also a focal point of Lostallo’s cultural heritage.

The parish church of S. Giorgio was first mentioned in 1219, rebuilt in the 17th century and renovated from 1939 to 1941. It features some old frescoes and houses a processional banner painted on both sides, dating from 1611. The oldest surviving document from Lostallo also dates from 1219. The Chiesa San Nicolao was consecrated in 1611 and has three stucco altars dating from 1767. The Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo was consecrated on 10 April 1633; the chapel of S. Maria Assunta in Sorte dates from 1611. These dates give each church and chapel its own historical point of reference.

Landscape Between Nature and Built Heritage

Above Lostallo, dry-stone walls are an architectural feature of the hilly landscape; chestnut forests are part of the area’s natural landscape. The Rosera floodplain is associated with the protection of floodplain areas of national importance. In Val d'Arbola, a hydroelectric power plant with a reservoir uses the Moesa’s left-bank tributaries. The area’s description thus brings together natural landscape features, cultural heritage and the use of the tributaries.

A Loop, a Stage and a Mountain Bike Route

The 10k Lostallo route is a relatively flat, 10-kilometre loop around Lostallo. It passes through Lostallo, Cabbiolo and Sorte, and much of it follows agricultural roads. The second stage of the Via San Bernardino also passes through Sorte, Lostallo and Cabbiolo, and continues to Soazza. The difference lies in the route and destination: a loop around Lostallo is contrasted with a stage ending in Soazza.

The Mesolcina Bike mountain bike route runs from San Bernardino Pass to Lostallo. Its route differs from the local loop and the Via stage, starting at the pass and ending in Lostallo. Conditions can vary on all three routes; check the current situation before setting out.

Paintball Mesolcina offers paintball as an outdoor activity in Lostallo. From the Lostallo, Posta bus stop, Paintball Mesolcina can be reached on foot in about ten minutes, or by walking more than 900 metres south. Access information may change; check it before travelling.
