The ruins of Castello di Mesocco, historic churches and trails leading in different directions give a stay in Misox a clear focus. Mesocco combines architectural and art history with opportunities to explore the area further on foot. First, consider whether you mainly want to see the historic buildings or include one of the described trails in your plans.
Mesocco and the Castle Ruins
Mesocco is a town and political municipality in the Italian-speaking part of the Swiss canton of GraubĂĽnden, in the Moesa region. It is considered the northernmost municipality in Misox. It includes the northern settlements of Pian San Giacomo, at 1,170 m above sea level, and San Bernardino, at 1,626 m above sea level.
Castello di Mesocco stands south of the village on a rocky spur, overlooking the valley. Steep rock faces protect the site on three sides. The castle is considered one of the most significant ruins in the canton of GraubĂĽnden and the largest ruin in Switzerland. It is open to visitors free of charge every day throughout the year; check the current access conditions before your visit.
Churches and Art History
Below the castle ruins stands Santa Maria del Castello, known for its art-historically significant monthly paintings. The church was first mentioned in 1219 in a deed of donation to San Vittore; its bell tower dates from around 1100. These two dates provide different historical reference points for the site: the church’s early mention and the approximate dating of the tower.
Chiesa parrocchiale dei SS Pietro e Paolo was also first mentioned in 1219. Fragments of late Gothic wall paintings from the third quarter of the 15th century can be found on the walls of its nave, near the side altars. A visit can therefore take in not only the monthly paintings at Santa Maria del Castello, but also wall paintings from a later period.
At Chiesa di San Rocco, the choir’s cross vault is decorated with frescoes by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli. The building was established as a hospice for Capuchin brothers in 1668. Alongside the older architectural and artistic connections of the other churches, it offers another way to explore Mesocco’s history, this time through a sacred space with frescoes and a documented former purpose.
Trails in Different Directions
The Mesocco–Ruina Castello–Soazza walk follows the former railway road. It leads from Mesocco to the imposing Castello di Mesocco castle complex and continues on to Soazza. You can travel by PostBus to Mesocco Stazione to start the walk. Check the current timetable before travelling.
The Via San Bernardino offers a different route: the true alpine section begins in Mesocco. The trail climbs steeply towards Pian San Giacomo, repeatedly following old road routes. Compared with the walk past the castle to Soazza, the steep climb is a key factor to consider when planning. The routes described can help you choose the trail that best suits your preferred itinerary.
Art Project and Museum
Zoo di Mesocco is a zoo without cages, intended to bring visitors especially close to nature. It comprises three trails. As an art project, it connects the districts of the municipality of Mesocco with a trail dedicated to sustainability and reflection. This offers a different way to experience the area than its historic buildings: the focus is on trails connecting the districts and the project’s themes.
The Mini Museum of Modern Art is also located in the heart of Mesocco. It adds another art-related place in the municipality to the area’s historic artistic attractions.
Plan Your Hotel Search Around Your Itinerary
When looking for hotels in Misox, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: will you spend most of your time visiting castles and churches, or would you like to include one of the trails? The walk to Soazza and the steep section of the Via San Bernardino follow different routes. Base your accommodation search and daily plans on the trail or cultural sites that matter most to you. This makes choosing a hotel part of planning your trip, rather than a step disconnected from your destination.
