Rossa Gr lies at an altitude of around 1,089 metres in the upper Calanca Valley, near the border with Ticino. As the highest settlement in the valley, Rossa combines a rich architectural heritage with trails through a varied mountain landscape. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between the two: in the village, the focus is on churches, chapels and historic stone houses; outside it, routes lead to a mountain lake, through the valley and into the Bedoleta Forest Reserve.

Churches, Chapels and Historic Settlement

The parish church of San Bernardo was built between 1677 and 1684. The chapels also tell the story of the area’s long building history: San Carlo al Sabbione dates from 1694 and preserves paintings by Giorgioli; Santa Maria della Neve in Valbella dates back to 1683. Santa Domenica is home to a parish church that ranks among Graubünden’s most significant Baroque religious buildings. Historic stone houses and chapels are part of the village’s cultural heritage as a whole.

Above Rossa lies La Scata / Calvari, an abandoned historic settlement. The chapels near the settlement can be reached via a scenic trail. Scata / Calvari offers another perspective as a cultural landscape: the area is entirely terraced with dry-stone walls. There is also a linden tree more than 200 years old at the entrance to Rossa, in the hamlet of Pighè. When exploring the village, you can therefore distinguish between religious buildings, traditional stone architecture and traces of the cultural landscape.

Trails through the Calanca Valley

The ViaCalanca is a hiking trail through the Val Calanca between Grono and Rossa, and can be walked in stages. The third stage runs from Selma to Rossa. At the same time, the ViaCalanca is part of the “Itinerari culturali della Svizzera” project, which enhances historic routes and contributes to preserving the landscape. If you are looking for a route with a clearly named destination, the hike to Lagh de Calvaresc offers another option: it starts in the village of Rossa near the historic parish church of San Bernardo and leads to the lake, which is also known as the “heart-shaped lake” because of its distinctive shape.

A snowshoe hike takes a different route through the area: it follows the Calancasca to Santa Domenica and returns via Augio. These routes therefore differ not only in name, but also in their stated destinations and sections of trail. Which one suits your travel plans depends on whether your focus is the stage between villages, the mountain lake or the snowshoe route described here.

Bedoleta and the Municipality’s Landscape

The municipality covers 58.89 km² and extends across steep slopes, forests, mountain streams and alpine meadows. Elevations in the Bedoleta Forest Reserve vary considerably: it extends from 1,200 metres to the upper tree line, which lies between 2,100 and 2,300 metres. The reserve covers around 727 hectares and is located on the orographically left-hand valley slope near Valbella.

Distinctive natural features include high-altitude larch forests with monumental trees, some of the oldest specimens in Europe. Alpine wildlife can also be observed in the reserve, including ibex, chamois, deer, black grouse, ptarmigan and golden eagles; individual sightings are not guaranteed. Rossa has an alpine climate, with warm summers and snowy winters. These seasonal differences provide a framework for planning a trip, but do not in themselves indicate conditions on any particular route.

Getting There and Accommodation

From Bellinzona, the bus connection described here runs in the direction of Mesocco or San Bernardino. In Grono, travellers change at the Bivio Calanca stop and then continue by bus to Rossa. Check the current timetable before departure so you can plan your transfer and onward journey accordingly.

In the hamlet of Augio, the La Cascata cultural and leisure centre also serves as a hotel and restaurant. As visitor services can change, check current opening information when planning your trip. Rossa thus offers a base in the Calanca Valley; the specific places and routes covered range from churches and the historic settlement to trails and landscape features of the municipality.
