Two-thirds of the municipality of Vandœuvres is made up of agricultural land. At the same time, a Gallo-Roman villa, religious buildings and historic gardens tell the story of a place with a rich past. When planning your stay, you can choose how to balance heritage, landscapes, markets and sporting activities—without assuming that all these themes call for the same kind of visit.

Architectural history, from Roman heritage to the chapel

The Gallo-Roman villa of Vandœuvres was built around the middle of the 1st century AD. Its baths were later expanded, its wall paintings renewed and its garden fitted with a monumental pool. These building phases give the site its own historical depth: its history includes not only the original structure but also the changes made later.

A Virginia tulip tree planted in 1761 has been growing in the Mairie park for more than 250 years. It provides a tangible chronological counterpoint to the Roman past. Religious architecture also reflects different periods: despite later changes, the Temple of Vandœuvres retains the Gothic character of the former Church of Saint-Jacques.

The Chapel of Saint-Jacques, south of the village, is a separate building. Architect Bernard Erbeia built it in 1975 for the Société catholique romaine de Choulex. Its design is shaped by its hexagonal form, choice of materials and the volume of its roof structure. Its excellent state of preservation and architectural qualities underpin its heritage value.

Rural landscapes and paths

The natural and landscape heritage includes rows of oaks, hedgerows, wooded strips, expansive areas of countryside and gardens. The historic gardens are listed in ICOMOS’s inventory of historic gardens in Switzerland. Numerous paths cross Vandœuvres and are listed in the Swiss Inventory of Historic Routes. This means the focus extends beyond individual buildings to include landscape features and historic paths.

For a longer outing, the Cologny-Vandœuvres guide describes a route that can be covered on foot or by bicycle, with family or friends. The newly reissued 2022 Seymaz-Région map offers another overview that explicitly covers several municipalities. It shows hiking trails through Choulex, Gy, Jussy, Meinier, Presinge, Puplinge and Vandœuvres. It also points out rural landscapes, nature reserves, monuments, picnic areas, regional gastronomy and public transport.

Golf, nature and riding lessons

The Golf Club de Genève has an 18-hole championship course within the municipality. Robert Trent Jones Senior laid it out in 1973; from 2016 to 2018, it was completely renovated to a plan by Robert Trent Jones Junior. Facilities include a covered driving range, several putting greens, and areas for short-game practice and bunker shots. The grounds are home to 48 types of meadow and lawn, 38 species of breeding birds, 20 species of dragonflies and 17 species of butterflies active during the day. The ponds also play an important role in supporting and protecting various species, as bodies of water are rare in the Cologny-Vandœuvres region.

The Manège de Vandoeuvres offers private riding lessons lasting 30 minutes for 50 francs or 50 minutes for 80 francs. Group lessons are listed at 50 francs for 50 minutes for two people, and 40 francs per person for three or more. The lesson duration and group size provide a concrete basis for comparison; confirm your preferred lesson format before booking.

Markets, events and getting there

The Les Bougeries farmers’ market is located at Ferme Michèle et René Stalder, Route de Choulex 80; visitors should call ahead before going.
