Collonge-Bellerive offers several distinct ways to enjoy a stay: the Château de Bellerive, birdwatching, named beaches, and culture and sport. The Château has been designated as heritage; the other themes offer their own points of interest. This lets you decide whether local history, nature, art on the beach or activity should take centre stage during your trip.
Local History and Heritage
The municipality covers 610 hectares and consists mainly of the villages of Collonge and Vésenaz, as well as the hamlets of Saint-Maurice, Bellerive and La Repentance. The parish of Collonge has been mentioned in texts since 1153. The parish of Saint-Maurice is documented from 1275 and was united with Collonge in the 16th century. In 1792, Collonge became a municipality, and in 1797 the place was given the name Collonge-Bellerive. These dates place the settlement names within a long history of local development and explain the municipality’s name today.
On 15 March 2023, the Council of State designated the Château de Bellerive as heritage. This provides a precisely dated connection to the municipality’s built heritage alongside the earlier references to the parishes. The designation is a distinct point of cultural and historical interest; it should not be confused with an events programme.
Birdwatching and Beach Stories
The Centre Nature de la Pointe-Ă -la-Bise has an observation tower for birdwatching. Guided tours are available on request. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, bear in mind that you need to request one and do not plan it as an unscheduled activity.
The beaches, too, have their own stories. Plage de la Nymphe is named after a sculpture by Natascha de Senger. A mermaid sculpture has stood on a rock in front of the beach since 1966. Plage de la Savonnière was traditionally used by the residents of Collonge to wash their laundry. Plage de la Pointe-à -la-Bise is another named beach in Collonge-Bellerive. The artistic connection and the traditional everyday use give each beach name a different local context.
Cultural Programme, Route and Sport
L’Épicentre is the cultural centre of the municipality of Collonge-Bellerive. Its hall hosts performances as part of the cultural season, which also features intimate concerts. The seasonal programme may change. If you want to include a particular performance in your stay, check the dates in advance.
The Route des Châteaux et Maisons fortes offers another cultural perspective. It runs through the Collonge-Bellerive area, between elegant villas and village-style houses. The route can be travelled in either direction, on foot or by vehicle. The contrast between the buildings described makes architecture itself a theme of the route, alongside the choice of travelling it on foot or by vehicle.
The Groupement intercommunal du Centre Sportif de Rouelbeau (GSR) provides facilities for a wide range of sports. The Centre Sportif de Rouelbeau also has a restaurant and a children’s play area. There are also public play areas in Vésenaz and Collonge. If you want to find out where the play areas are, you can distinguish between the one at the sports centre and the public play areas in the two villages.
When planning a specific cultural event, the seasonal performance dates are important; guided tours at the Centre Nature are available on request. Arrange these scheduled or request-based activities first, then choose the other local stories, the route or sport according to your interests.
