Between the banks of the Arve and the slopes of the Salève, Veyrier Ge brings together landscapes, history and places with very different characteristics. The municipality borders France and lies on the southern outskirts of Geneva. Farmland, natural areas and residential neighbourhoods shape its rural, nature-oriented character. Agriculture defined Veyrier for centuries; later, the economy diversified, also in connection with the growing importance of its proximity to Geneva.

Landscape and Industrial Heritage

The Vallon de Sierne is considered an exceptional natural and landscape area. It lies within a nationally protected ISOS zone and the protected zone along the banks of the Arve. For visitors wishing to discover Veyrier through its landscape, it is a striking point of reference: the protected area and riverbanks form part of the local setting, while the municipality as a whole is also shaped by residential neighbourhoods and farmland.

The Berges de Vessy, in the Vessy sector of Veyrier, reveal another side of the area's history. The former water-pumping station is located at the entrance to the Arve loop and houses significant industrial heritage. Its technical history provides a distinct contrast with the protected landscape and the historic churches of the area.

Historic Buildings and Border History

The Ancien château de Veyrier was built between 1767 and 1769 by Pierre-Claude de la Fléchère. Its classification number is MS-c172; the classification is dated 24 November 1961. The Église Saint-Maurice stands on Place de l’Eglise and dates back to the Middle Ages. It was rebuilt towards the end of the 18th century with the support of the Count of Veyrier; its bell tower received a spire in 1907. The Chapelle de Veyrier dates from 1881, was later enlarged and was restored in 2006. The religious buildings thus reveal different historical periods: medieval origins, renovations and later interventions.

A distinctive border history is associated with the Cimetière israélite de Veyrier, which lies on both sides of the French-Swiss border. Several Jewish people fleeing Nazi persecution crossed the border through the cemetery. You must carry valid identification when visiting; check the visitor information in advance.

Trails, Water and Events

The Zig-Zag Veyrier–Étrembières educational trail runs along the border. Allow about four hours for the full route; the terrain is relatively flat and varied. If you plan to walk the trail, check the conditions and access in advance. Another activity on the water is rafting on the Arve: the seven-kilometre route begins at Route du Pas de l’Échelle 4 in 1255 Veyrier and continues to the Arve's confluence with the Rhône at Pointe de la Jonction. Check current availability and seasonal operating times before making plans.

Recurring events also give the year in Veyrier its own rhythm. Veyrier's major festival, the Vogue, takes place in September on the weekend closest to 22 September, Saint Maurice's Day; check the annual programme for the exact dates. At the end of each year, the municipality holds a Christmas market. It includes music and activities for children, though individual programme items may vary.

A non-competitive 8.960-kilometre walk is also organised in connection with the Escalade festival. It starts at Chemin des Rasses in the municipality of Veyrier and finishes at Parc des Bastions. Dates and event arrangements may vary. This gives you a choice of different options when planning: a border trail with a longer walking time, a rafting route on the river, or a visit timed around the festivals.
