A signposted 15-kilometre walking trail winds through Vernier’s neighbourhoods and green spaces. The “La Balade de Vernier” connects parks with a section along the Rhône; information boards along the route tell the story of the municipality and share local anecdotes. This makes the trail more than a way to get some exercise: it also offers a thread to guide your own discoveries in Vernier.

Walks between neighbourhoods and the Rhône

The “La Balade de Vernier” leads from park to park and is considered accessible to everyone. Allow around three hours and 30 minutes for the full route; it can also be completed in several stages. Along the Rhône, one section of the route offers a natural setting and exceptional views. The trail thus combines views of green spaces with insights into the municipality’s history.

The “Au Moulin” leisure area is also shaped by its setting on the water: it lies between the Rhône and the Bois de la Grille and has direct access to the river. The area includes a picnic spot, a sports area, a viewpoint and a landing stage. The footpaths along the Rhône are open to the public and are currently used by many walkers. The Bois de la Grille has been classified as a nature reserve since 2011. The Bois-des-Frères near Le Lignon reaches the banks of the Rhône and merges into the Bois de la Grille.

Vernier’s public outdoor spaces also include parks, orchards, water play areas and walking trails. Some have children’s playgrounds and picnic areas. These amenities are not all grouped in one place, so it is worth exploring the green spaces separately to get your bearings.

More trails and ways to stay active

The Helsana Trails are signposted routes of varying lengths for walking, Nordic walking and running. They are open around the clock all year round and cater to both beginners and experienced athletes. In Vernier, they are connected to the Bois-des-Frères, the Presqu’île de Loëx and Lignon. If you are looking for a set distance with exercise stations, the Zurich Parcours Vita is at Route du Bois-des-Frères in Lignon: this fitness trail is 2.2 kilometres long and has 14 stations for physical exercises. Another way to stay active is the Ranches pump track near École des Ranches on Rue du Village.

Parks, animals and places to relax

La Fermette is an animal park with heritage breeds of sheep and chickens from the Fondation ProSpecieRara. Its educational purpose is part of its character, as is the opportunity to get close to the animals; La Fermette is open to everyone. From there, you can enjoy views of the Rhône and Le Lignon. Parc Chauvet-Lullin covers 10,000 square metres in Vernier’s old village. It has two children’s play areas, as well as tables and benches.

Parc de l’Étang offers a different kind of park experience. It was created in the 19th century around a man-made pond set in a concrete basin. The walking areas have been improved to connect the pond and the park with the new neighbourhood of the same name.

Municipal history and culture

Vernier’s history is linked to the Roman road between Geneva and Lyon, as well as to mule and horseshoe finds dating from the time of Julius Caesar. Those interested in local history can also discover it along the way: the information boards on the “La Balade de Vernier” present the municipality’s history and local anecdotes.

The three municipal libraries offer more than books: they are free and open to everyone, and regularly host cultural activities, social gatherings, events and educational programmes. Every May, the Fête du Printemps takes place, with activities and stalls showcasing local agriculture and biodiversity. These cultural offerings complement the walking trails and green spaces with insights into community life.
