Plan-les-Ouates brings together listed buildings, public art, walking trails and a nature reserve, all set against a long tradition of fruit growing and viticulture. When planning your stay, you can therefore focus on different themes: architectural history, nature watching, crafts or seasonal events. These themes provide guidance without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
Heritage, architecture and art
The Maison forte d’Arare is a cantonally protected residence dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its distinctive features include a round entrance tower, monumental chimneys dating from when it was built, exposed wooden-beamed ceilings and carved elements. The Tour de l’ancien château de Saconnex-d’Arve, by contrast, is the surviving tower of a medieval castle built around 1300 by Count Amédée II of Geneva. The Église de Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon features stained-glass works by Paul Monnier, made using painted glass and glass fragments.
The works of art also add their own distinctive touches. La Butte features a sculpture by Denys Wasem, made from a metal structure with Altuglas panels. Its appearance changes with the surrounding landscape and sunlight; climbing holds allude to alpine sports. A path of spheres also runs along the two Mails de Plan-les-Ouates and the Promenade tordue. Cécile Dupaquier and Bertrand Saugier designed it after a 2011 competition on the theme of “urban nature.” Most of the buildings marked on the heritage map are privately owned: they should be viewed from the street and not entered.
La julienne offers another cultural focus. This community hub includes more than a hundred courses, a restaurant, an event hall, an exhibition space and a library. Its activities include courses, exhibitions, artistic production, expression and discovery; specific programs and courses may change.
Walking trails and nature watching
Seven walking trails, each taking one to two hours, explore the municipality’s historical, architectural and environmental features. One nature destination is the Bois du Milly and Étangs de la Bistoquette area: a large part of it has been designated a nature reserve since June 26, 2013. The Canton of Geneva manages and owns the area. Visitors can observe amphibians, mammals, birds, dragonflies, butterflies and other insects there. Amphibians include common frogs, common toads, alpine newts and smooth newts.
Following works carried out in 2016, new paths were created in the area to guide walkers and protect the forest. Note the seasonal closure of a specific section: the Chemin de l’Abérieu, between the Sentier de l’Étang-du-Paradis and the Chemin des Bellins, is closed every year from February 1 to April 15 to protect migrating amphibians. Check the dates before your trip. Another option for running or walking is the signposted Parcours d’entraînement de l’Escalade, which can be used year-round and in all weather.
Fruit growing, wine tradition and crafts
Traditional high-stem orchards shape the regional landscape and are part of Plan-les-Ouates’ agricultural heritage. The Verger haute-tige de Saconnex-d’Arve is home to 18 different fruit tree varieties, including the “Croison,” which originates from Saconnex-d’Arve. The Ancien pressoir à vin stands as a symbol of the municipality’s winemaking history.
The history of the Distillerie de Saconnex-d’Arve is also connected to fruit processing. Founded in 1895, its premises are now used by craftspeople who make drinks using traditional methods. Visits and tastings focus on making and sampling fruit spirits, and can be rounded off with a small aperitif or, if applicable, a meal. Booking is required. The short-format visit explains the distillation process and includes tastings of six fruit spirits.
Sports and events
The Centre sportif des Cherpines hosts sporting events, games, training sessions and various leisure activities year-round. Nearby is the Plan-les-Ouates skatepark, an approximately 400 m² open-air facility for skateboarding, freestyle scootering, roller sports and BMX. Admission is free, and the facility is open year-round. Check accessibility before your visit in case of maintenance work or events. The Centre équestre de Plan-les-Ouates lies on the edge of the Aire and can be reached by bus, bicycle, kick scooter or car. It was established in 1996 following the development of facilities at the Centre sportif des Cherpines; its facilities have been modernized over time. Training helps riders develop their skills while respecting the horse.
La Cour des Contes celebrates the art of storytelling. This annual festival has been running since its first edition in 1995. In 2005, it was extended to the municipality’s schools through Contes à l’école. The Fête du Feuillu is also held annually, preferably on the first weekend of May; if that date is not practical, the celebration is postponed. The procession includes flower wreaths, the young bride and groom, the Bête and a maypole decorated with ribbons by children. Traditional songs and dances follow, along with a shared snack; details may vary slightly from one edition to the next.
Autour du temps focuses on watchmaking, with visits to watchmaking workshops, introductory workshops for children and adults, and a watchmaking trail in Plan-les-Ouates. As the program and dates depend on each edition, check them before your trip.
