Satigny is best explored through its wine-growing landscape. A cellar and winery tour with wine tasting complements this focus. Historical traces date from the Late Roman Empire to the Early Middle Ages. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Satigny, winegrowing and history offer concrete themes to help you decide on your trip.

Vineyards, soils and individual wineries

With 438 hectares of vineyard area, Satigny is Switzerland’s largest wine-growing municipality. This total area shows the scale of winegrowing; individual slopes and wineries offer a closer look at location, soil and appellation of origin.

The slope of Choully rises above the village of Satigny. Its vineyards lie at an altitude of 450 to 500 metres on clay-silt soil with limestone. The location and soil profile add specific details to the municipality-wide picture of winegrowing.

Domaine des Alouettes has 17 hectares of vineyard area, most of which lies within the controlled Satigny appellation on the right bank of the Rhône. Its terroir is predominantly clay-limestone. Domaine de la Devinière cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards in Satigny. These figures refer to individual wineries and should be distinguished from the municipality’s 438 hectares of vineyard area.

Winemaking and tasting

At Domaine de la Devinière, the cellar and winery tour includes explanations ranging from vine cultivation to winemaking; wine tastings are also available. The tour lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. If you plan to take part, confirm the arrangements before you arrive.

Monastic history and archaeological traces

A monastic complex existed in Satigny from the early 10th century. Its priory was subordinate to the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin d’Ainay in Lyon. In 1134, the religious complex came under the control of the cathedral chapter of Saint-Pierre in Geneva. The two dates mark distinct stages: the complex’s early existence and the later change in control.

An excavation at Peney uncovered a find of almost 3,000 bronze coins from the Late Roman Empire. This archaeological discovery adds a much earlier period to the history of the medieval monastery.

Walking landscapes and November events

A hiking route passes through Satigny, Dardagny and Russin, taking in vineyards, villages and valley hollows. The route therefore focuses on a variety of landscapes and places. Check current route conditions before setting out.

The valley hollows of the Roulave and the Allondon are rich in exceptional fauna and flora, offering an opportunity to learn more about local biodiversity. This is a different thematic focus from winegrowing: here, the emphasis is on natural diversity.

In Peissy, the Feast of Saint Martin and the New Wine takes place every year on a Saturday in November. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and programme for that year’s edition separately.
