Brächete brings Zäziwil’s traditional flax custom to life: visitors can follow the steps involved in turning the flax plant into linen fabric or rope. Together with its distinctive church, the Chisetal and the trails through the surrounding countryside, the village offers a variety of reasons to visit.

Zäziwil in the Chisetal

Zäziwil lies in the western Emmental, between the Blasenfluh and Kurzenberg areas in the Chisetal. The Chisetal is a transit valley between the Aare Valley and the Emmental. For centuries, the Chise and Zäzibach streams have shaped the landscape and people’s lives, creating fertile farmland and a recreational area. Trails around the village offer views of the ravines and ridges typical of the Emmental.

The Bueleberg natural forest reserve is located within the municipality, north of Zäziwil, in the eastern part of Bueleberg. It ranges from 783 to 963 metres above sea level. The reserve aims to protect and promote threatened plant and animal species and their habitats. Two official hiking trails skirt the area: an upper trail leads to Oberthal, while a lower one leads to Rünkhofen. Check local access conditions before visiting.

For a break, quiet spots by the water and the Waldmätteli with its fire pit invite you to linger. The fire pit at the edge of the forest has two fire sites, a small playground and a fountain; a small stream is nearby.

Brächete, market and church

In 1955, committed local figures revived Brächete in Zäziwil as an old custom. At the event, you can watch the traditional steps of flax processing, as in Gotthelf’s time: from the plant material to linen fabric or rope. Brächete takes place every year on the last Wednesday in September.

The market is also part of the event. More than 100 market stalls—around 120—offer Emmental and regional specialities, as well as traditional goods. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; individual vendors and offerings may vary from one year to the next. If you are planning your stay around Brächete, check the specific event dates in good time.

Zäziwil Church was built in 1963/64 by Bernese architect Werner Küenzi and is considered an exceptional landmark of the village. Its features include narrow, high-set window slits with stained glass, as well as a glass altar back wall with a simple iron cross. These details give the building a distinct architectural character, setting it apart from Brächete’s historic craft tradition.

Castle site and trails

The Zwingherrenhubel castle site lies south of Zäziwil. The visible castle mound has a steeply sloping main plateau, ditches on its southern and western sides, and an outer rampart. A marked hiking trail leads from the last building, steeply through the forest on the east side of the road, to the castle mound in about ten minutes. Suitable footwear may be necessary for this steep forest trail.

Another marked hiking trail starts at Zäziwil railway station, heads south via Moosgraben and reaches the castle mound in about 30 minutes. The two travel times refer to different starting points. Conditions on the route from the station may vary by season; take this into account when planning your visit.

Creative activities and encounters with alpacas

Rana Atelier offers sewing workshops for children, where they can make items such as phone pouches, toiletry bags and key rings. Other workshops for children aged two and up combine painting, modelling and stamping with paints, different materials and tools. Adults can take part in themed workshops and sewing projects for groups, beginners and more experienced participants. Confirm dates directly with the studio before planning a visit.

Alpakaaktiv offers a relaxing family experience that includes time near the alpacas and nature observation. Visitors learn about the business, how the animals are cared for and its philosophy; afterwards, they are shown the farm shop’s alpaca products. Booking in advance is recommended. Check booking arrangements directly with the provider.
