Grosshöchstetten combines a history of churches and industry with outdoor activities. A tangible testament to its long building history is an 11-metre section of the church’s foundation; two hiking routes also end in the village. The range of options makes it easy to plan culture and outdoor activities as separate focuses for your stay.
The church and history along the Mühlebach
The church in Grosshöchstetten features valuable stained-glass windows by Hans Zehender, dating from 1597. During renovation work in 1978, fragments of three Passion scenes from the mid-15th century were uncovered: the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion and the Deposition from the Cross. The church thus brings together evidence from different periods.
The preserved north façade also reveals the building’s history: an 11-metre section of the foundation comes from a pre-Romanesque predecessor church. By appointment with the parish office, you can visit the underground section of the preserved north side of the medieval nave. The church is also suitable as a concert venue thanks to its size and excellent acoustics.
Cacis Mill is the last surviving testament to the historic industry along the Mühlebach. Concerts and exhibitions are held here regularly. The Kühltür is another concert venue, where artists from a range of musical genres perform at irregular intervals. If you would like to attend a concert, check the dates for your stay.
Cultural experiences and food
At Cacis Mill, participants can spend around three hours shaping a small figure from a lump of clay while enjoying an aperitif ordered in advance. Booking is required for this activity. The dining options include classic Italian dishes, a Mediterranean multi-course menu and a varied pasta buffet featuring homemade fresh pasta. Arrangements for these options are made directly with the mill.
Swimming pool and pump track
Grosshöchstetten swimming pool has a beach volleyball court. During the summer season, the outdoor pool offers a 25-metre swimming pool and diving boards at heights of 3 and 1 metre. Swimming is therefore seasonal; beach volleyball and swimming are two different ways to use the facilities.
Grosshöchstetten pump track is located at the Thalibühl sports and recreation complex. The paved circuit, with its rollers and bends, can be ridden with any type of wheeled sports equipment. Use has been free of charge since July 2024. The pump track is generally accessible on foot or by bicycle from the village or train station via Thalibühlweg and Hürnbergackerweg. Check the route locally before setting off.
Hikes ending in Grosshöchstetten
The high-altitude hike from Arnisäge via Blasenfluh to Grosshöchstetten takes around three and a half hours. It mostly follows wide country and forest tracks; there are numerous benches and fire pits along the way. The route offers panoramic views across the Swiss Plateau and Emmental, reaching as far as the Bernese High Alps. It ends at Grosshöchstetten station, at an altitude of 743 metres.
Another option is the “Hügelparadies und Alpenpanorama” (Hill Paradise and Alpine Panorama) hike from Emmenmatt to Grosshöchstetten. It is 12.6 kilometres long and takes around three hours and fifty minutes. The estimated times for the two hikes are similar, but their starting points differ. You can therefore take both the starting point and the route into account when choosing.
For regional tourist destinations in and around Grosshöchstetten, Emmental Region and Bernese Hiking Trails provide guidance. This means that, alongside activities in the village, you can also choose hikes with different starting points.
