Worb combines a rich architectural history with trails and leisure activities that can be enjoyed in different ways. Worb Castle and Neuschloss represent different periods of construction and use; the church and Schlossstalden add to the historical picture. At the same time, the village has largely preserved its rural character, even as modern buildings shape its appearance.

In 1898, the Bern-Worb Railway reached the village centre; from 1913, the Worblental Railway connected Worb with neighbouring municipalities.

Castles, church and local history

Worb Castle is a medieval castle with a Baroque residential wing. Its core probably dates back to the 11th century; the high medieval complex is dated to around 1200. Neuschloss offers a different historical perspective: the Baroque castle and seat of the lordship were built between 1734 and 1737 for Franz Ludwig von Graffenried. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, the castle served members of the ruling family as a year-round residence or country retreat.

Worb’s church also brings together several historical periods. It dates back to the 11th century and is an early Romanesque hall church. The tower dates from 1430; at the beginning of the 16th century, the nave, tower, sacristy and chancel were renovated or rebuilt. Its features include stained-glass windows, choir stalls and a baptismal font. The building’s form, renovation history and furnishings offer different ways to explore it.

Schlossstalden connects the village of Worb with the castle and was once a thoroughfare towards Enggistein and the Emmental. It is also a historic craft district in the village. The defining feature was the water power of the Enggistein stream, which has been diverted from the Biglen stream since the 14th century. Water power drove a mill, smithies, a sawmill, grinding and fulling in Worb’s historic trades. Its combination of a transport route and a centre of craft activity makes Schlossstalden a distinct historical theme alongside the castle buildings.

History trail and activities

Worb’s history trail has 20 stops and runs from «Bachteilete» near Metzgerhüsi to the RBS station in Worb. These named endpoints give the route a clear direction; the stops make it a way to explore local history on a walk. Alongside individual historic buildings, the trail connects several points of interest.

For other interests, there are facilities at Wislepark and in Wislewald. Wislepark has a 50-metre Olympic-size pool; in winter, it has two curling rinks. The seasonal availability of curling is important to note. Check current operating information before your visit, as details may change. The Vitaparcours in Wislewald is about 3,100 metres long and has 15 stations with different exercises. So, alongside swimming and curling, you can also choose a fitness trail with several exercise stations.

Weekly market on Bärenplatz

Worb’s weekly market takes place on Saturdays on Bärenplatz. If you would like to include the market in your plans, check the date before travelling. Alongside the historic sites and varied leisure activities, it gives your stay a specific weekly highlight.
