The «Zum Hallerstein» hiking route runs mostly across flat terrain and mainly along paved roads. The hike takes about an hour and a half and is easily manageable with a stroller. If you prefer to walk on unpaved paths, you can choose the circular route around Lercheberg: it takes about an hour and 15 minutes, but is not suitable for strollers. Check local conditions before setting out.
Choose hikes by duration and difficulty
Another suggested hike leads to Wichtrach’s highest point at 794 metres. The route takes about two and a half hours, runs mostly along unpaved paths and is not suitable for strollers. Conditions may vary by season; check them before setting out. The «Durch zwei Gräben» route is shorter: it explores the Gansgraben and Leusegraben and takes about an hour and a half. It is suitable only for experienced walkers and «scramblers».
Another loop starts at Thalgut, follows unpaved paths to Kirchdorf and returns to Thalgut via Hinder Jaberg. Allow about an hour and a half for this route, too. There are more than 20 marked hiking trails around Wichtrach, ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes. The suggested hikes already vary considerably: from a mostly flat, stroller-friendly route to paths with unpaved sections or a higher level of difficulty.
Nature and time outdoors
The Wolfetal nature reserve includes a large pond, surrounding gravel areas, groups of bushes and trees, a hedge and two strips of meadow. Its wildlife is also distinctive: the reserve is home to a population of midwife toads, and the rare red-backed shrike is a regular visitor. However, a particular sighting is not guaranteed. Check access conditions before visiting.
There is a barbecue and bathing area at Fläckeplatz. If you would like to swim there, check the local bathing conditions. For a different view of the surrounding area, a memorial stone at the Eiche viewpoint commemorates the land consolidation carried out from 1969 to 1979.
Church, gravel history and local collections
The church at the foot of Lerchenberg stands out for its tall, slender tower. At 46 metres, it is one of the highest in the canton. The church was built at its present location in 1474 and can also be used by non-residents.
The Erlebnisweg trail run by the Stiftung Landschaft und Kies explains the history of the gravel pit; check access conditions before setting out. The vintage car collection at Bernstrasse 8 is open to groups by prior arrangement. So, visiting the collection requires advance booking, while the trail is an option for anyone interested in the history of gravel extraction.
A place to pause and practical directions
Fusionsplatz lies between the Oberwichtrach settlement and Stadelfeld, near the railway station. Two benches stand beneath a shady tree, and the square offers a lovely view of the Alps and the Jura. It has been there since 2004, combining a peaceful place to stop with views of two distinct mountain ranges.
The Aaretal Sports Centre is one of the few heated ice rinks in Switzerland. If travelling by public transport, it is about a 15-minute walk from Wichtrach station. This time estimate is a guide for reaching the destination; check local conditions before setting out. This makes it possible to weigh up hiking, wildlife watching, culture and sport as different focuses for a stay in Wichtrach.
