Six hiking routes, views of the Bernese Oberland and the Jura range, and distinctive landmarks that bear witness to local history give Oberthal a varied character. At Blasenfluh, the landscape and trails shape the experience; at Lychleustein, unusual features of the stone are linked to a local tradition. You can shape your stay around outdoor activity, views and history.

Hiking between Moosegg and Blasenfluh

The Oberthal hiking guide covers six routes. The signposted Alpine Panorama Trail No. 3 leads from Moosegg towards Blasenfluh. A route to Blasenfluh passes the Waldhäusern inn before continuing into the forest. The Moosegg–Blasenfluh hike is rated moderate and involves 162 metres of ascent and 162 metres of descent. Some sections are steep and slippery, so caution and sturdy footwear are recommended. For this hike, the starting point at Moosegg is accessible by public transport on weekends and public holidays. Check the relevant connection for your travel date.

The Heart Route follows car-free paths around Blasenfluh and is fully signposted. At 1,118 metres above sea level, Blasenfluh is the highest point in the municipalities of Oberthal, Signau and Lauperswil. Eastern Emmental lies below the trail; a panoramic information board at Blasenfluh provides information about the municipalities and their history. From some viewpoints in Oberthal, you can see both the mountains of the Bernese Oberland and the Jura range.

Local history and unusual stones

The hamlet of Möschberg is documented as early as 1544, with four houses. At an elevation of 853 metres, it has impressive farmhouses and a hotel of the same name that hosts seminars. Möschberg is also considered the birthplace of organic farming in the German-speaking world.

Lychleustein is a granite stone on the southern edge of the road from Möschberg to Alterswil. It is regarded as a cup-marked stone and a resting place for the dead. In the past, it was a pillar measuring 1.6 to 1.8 metres in height, bearing the inscription “1755 HS”. The stone has two round holes, one of which goes all the way through. According to an old custom, funeral processions passing by would stop at Lychleustein.

Recreation area and pump track

The Bauplatz recreation area has several fire pits, as well as tables and benches for a picnic or barbecue. Visitors can also enjoy an Alpine panorama there. It combines an outdoor break with views of the surrounding landscape.

A 2021 municipal FAQ describes the Oberthal pump track as a free sports and leisure facility for all age groups. All kinds of bicycles can use it. Helmets are compulsory on the pump track; check the facility’s current status and applicable rules before your visit.

Getting there and places to stay

The main access road to Oberthal has led from Zäziwil since 1871. Oberthal has not been served by public transport since July 2014; check how to get there before your trip. The Moosegg hiking start point is a separate case: it is accessible by public transport on weekends and public holidays for the hike to Blasenfluh.

The Bio-Garni-Hotel Möschberg welcomes individual guests seeking rest and relaxation in peaceful surroundings at the entrance to the Emmental. Möschberg Hotel is directly accessible by car and has parking spaces in front of the building. Freshly prepared dishes made with organic, mostly regional produce are offered.
