A small forest lake, paths through green surroundings and a regional sporting tradition shape the discoveries around Obersteckholz. At Aspisee, distinctive landscapes meet practical places to rest; Hornussen and local history offer different highlights. This lets you choose your stay based on whether you are more interested in nature, outdoor activities or traces of history.

Forest Lake and Hamlet Landscape

Obersteckholz is located in the Oberaargau region of the Swiss Plateau and is now a locality within the political municipality of Langenthal in the Canton of Bern. Until 31 December 2020, Obersteckholz was an independent political municipality; on 1 January 2021, it merged with Langenthal. The locality includes several hamlets around a treeless hill at an elevation of 571 m above sea level.

Aspisee is a small forest lake in the municipality of Obersteckholz. It was created in a glacial meltwater channel in the late 1980s. The area around the lake is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, particularly in spring during the frog and toad mating season. The Aspi–Rickenzopfen area in the municipalities of Langenthal and Obersteckholz has the priority function type of nature and landscape conservation.

At Aspisee: Paths, Picnic Areas and Fire Pits

The Aspisee recreation area includes footpaths, a bridge, a shelter, two fire pits, a fountain, tables and seating, as well as a portable toilet. It also includes the car park in Furenwald. The municipal regulations dated 1 November 2021 list these facilities; check them locally before your trip.

The municipal regulations dated 1 November 2021 provide that the large fire pit and the shelter can be rented for a fee. The second, smaller fire pit remains accessible at all times to pedestrians and other visitors. If you are planning a gathering, confirm the availability of the rental facilities in advance.

There are several named landmarks to help you find your way on foot to Aspisee. From Langenthal railway station, a signposted footpath leads to the lake, covering about 2 km or around 20 minutes. A well-signposted path leads there from the animal park; shortly after Aspiplatz, a shortcut runs directly through the forest to the lake and is marked as a yellow hiking trail. On the route from the animal park, signs may temporarily change due to maintenance or detours; check the waymarking locally.

Hornussen and the History of Obersteckholz

The Obersteckholz Hornussen Society was founded in 1911. At the so-called “Bähnlihornussen,” interested visitors are introduced to the sport of Hornussen and can try their hand as a striker; a barbecue party follows. If this activity suits your plans, check current availability before booking.

Historically, Obersteckholz is associated with the Barons of Langenstein and the Monastery of St. Urban; Obersteckholz was donated to the monastery in 1194. The livelihoods of the time are also part of the local history: in the 18th and 19th centuries, home-based linen weaving and straw plaiting were among the supplementary agricultural occupations.

Another example of architectural heritage can be found at the address Habcherig 22. The building is classified as “worthy of protection” in the 2022 draft revision of the Langenthal building inventory. Alongside the forest lake and activities, historical landmarks and former ways of making a living are therefore also options to explore during a stay in Obersteckholz.
