A fortified customs crossing over the Aare marks the historic beginnings of Aarwangen. Later, the crossing was associated with a bridge, a customs post and a castle. Aarwangen Castle was built around 1266 to oversee the important Aare bridge. Over the centuries, it changed from an aristocratic residence into a Bernese administrative seat and later into a modern administrative building housing offices, a court and a prison. The site brings together the history of the castle and the development of public administration.

Castle, Church and Historic Buildings

The exhibition in the castle explores its history. An interactive robotic arm presents products from regional businesses. Two escape-room experiences are set in former prison cells; there is also a virtual reality experience about the historically documented Gugler raid of 1375. Younger visitors can explore the Children’s Castle, an imaginatively designed trail. Each attraction offers a different perspective: discover history through an exhibition, playful challenges and digital interpretation.

The church in Aarwangen also tells the story of changing religious practices. It has 20 historically significant coloured coats-of-arms panels and is one of the first rural churches in the Canton of Bern to be newly built for Reformed services. Other historic buildings include the former administrative office, a solid, Neoclassical-style building with a hipped roof dating from 1830 to 1832, and the so-called New Granary of 1762, which houses the former boys’ residential school.

Bridges and the Aare Riverbanks

The Aare crossing comprises two structures from different periods: a road and pedestrian bridge built in 1997 and a railway truss bridge built in 1907. Its significance goes back further than these bridges. In the past, ships docked here after travelling along this important waterway, bringing large wine barrels from Burgundy and western Switzerland or unloading grain. The Aare crossing thus brings together today’s bridges and the river’s former use as a transport route.

The Aare through Aarwangen has mostly natural banks. A route from Aarwangen follows the river through a protected landscape of islands, alluvial forests and waterbirds. The Aare Riverbank Trail starts at Aarwangen station. If you would rather explore a different natural spot, Mühleweiher is a 0.1-hectare lake that is ideal for walks, cycling and enjoying nature. Höchbachweiher consists of three ponds fed by a restored stream. They provide suitable habitats for amphibians, dragonflies and other aquatic wildlife. A platform allows visitors to observe wildlife in a controlled way and access the ponds for nature encounters.

Muniberg adds another perspective on the landscape: the high-level trail is ideal for hiking, and offers wonderful views of the Alps. The Aare riverbank route and the high-level trail offer different experiences: river scenery with islands and alluvial forests, or views from Muniberg. Which appeals to you more depends on whether you would rather spend your stay by the river or enjoy the views.

Local Food and Getting Here

At Aarwangen Castle, the Aare Terrace above the riverbank is a relaxing place to linger. The Castle Café serves cake, coffee from a local roastery and refreshing drinks. Langatun Distillery offers another blend of local history and good food and drink: it produces artisan single malts in Aarwangen’s granary, built in 1616. Distillery tours with whisky tastings are available by prior arrangement.

At distilling seminars, participants learn how whisky is made, from grain to bottle, and get hands-on experience at the distillery. Seminars are held on selected dates or by arrangement. At the “Blend your own Langatun” seminar, participants can create a whisky blend to their own specifications and bottle it. This seminar is also offered on selected dates or by arrangement. The annual Langatun Whisky Day has been a regular part of the distillery’s programme for more than 15 years.

For travel, the regional railway operated by Aare Seeland mobil AG, known colloquially as “Bipperlisi”, connects Aarwangen with the SBB stations in Langenthal and Oensingen. Check current services before travelling. By car, Aarwangen is only a few minutes from the Niederbipp motorway exit on the A1. This information complements your discoveries in the area without prescribing a set itinerary.
