Lotzwil lies in the Bernese Oberaargau region in the Langete Valley, 504 metres above sea level and 2.5 kilometres south of Langenthal. When planning a stay, you can choose different focuses: architectural history centred on the church, local industrial history at the museum, or the relationship between people and the natural environment along the Eco Trail. There are also the irrigated meadows as a cultural landscape and the traditional Apple and Cider Festival in October. These themes involve different timing considerations: the festival has a specific annual date, while the church, museum and trail each have their own visiting conditions.

Church and Cultural Heritage

The present-day Lotzwil Church was built in 1682–83 to plans by Abraham I Dünz. A tower stands north of the church; its core is probably medieval. The church and tower thus represent different periods: the church’s construction dates are precisely documented, while the dating of the tower’s core remains probable. The church is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00; confirm opening hours before your visit.

Another place of interest for architecture enthusiasts is the Ingold-Hof farmhouse at Huttwilstrasse 5. The 2021 edition of the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance lists it in Category A. If the current inventory status is important for your plans, check the latest register entry.

Museum and Eco Trail

The Lotzwil Museum is located in the municipal building and preserves historical objects from local industries. It opens by appointment; you can obtain current opening hours by emailing ovlg@lotzwilmuseum.ch. Contact the museum before your visit rather than assuming it will be open for a spontaneous visit.

The Eco Trail also starts at the municipal building, one minute from the railway station. The easy one-hour route has eleven marked stops. They provide information about the relationship between people and the natural environment. The museum and trail therefore offer different focuses: one centres on historical objects from local industries, while the other explores a theme at several stops. Check the local signs before setting off.

Landscape and October Date

Some of the cultural landscapes known as irrigated meadows in Lotzwil are listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance as BLN site 1312. Lotzwil also has marked cycle paths, some of which are separate for bicycles and mopeds. The information about the landscape and cycle paths offers a different perspective on the village from the church and museum: it brings cultural landscapes and getting around to the fore, without specifying a particular cycling route.

The traditional Apple and Cider Festival is held on the second Saturday in October along Bahnhofstrasse and on the village square. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the arrangements for the relevant year. For the festival, the date is the key planning point; the Eco Trail, by contrast, takes about an hour, while a museum visit requires an enquiry in advance.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

Lotzwil is on the Langenthal–Huttwil–Wolhusen–Lucerne railway line and is served by Lucerne S-Bahn lines S6 and S7. Check the current timetable for your travel date. For rail travellers, the Eco Trail’s starting point offers a useful reference: it is at the municipal building, one minute from the railway station. This allows you to plan the trail as a separate block of time while also taking into account that visits to the church, museum opening hours and the October festival all have different timing requirements.
