Bannwil brings together the Aare landscape, forests and a long local history. The municipality is located in the Oberaargau region of the Swiss Plateau, on the northern bank of the Aare. The surroundings are shaped by open fields, meadows, marshland and forests, and include Vogelraupfi Island, which is a protected nature area. The landscape is ideal for walks and bike rides. Two distinct highlights are the Zurich vitaparcours Bannwil and the Berke-Chehr.

Forest, Aare and protected landscape

The Zurich vitaparcours Bannwil is 3.0 km long, with an elevation gain of 50 m. It starts at the Bannerrain forest hut. Along the trail, you can experience the forest, from dense greenery to light-filled high forest. The Berke-Chehr offers a different focus: it usually starts at the bridge in Berken or at the power station in Bannwil, follows both banks of the Aare and offers occasional views of Vogelraupfi. For the trail, the distance, elevation gain and forest character are key points of reference; the Berke-Chehr focuses on the Aare landscape and possible views of the island. Check the local signposting before setting out: the trail’s distance details may change after maintenance work, and conditions on the Berke-Chehr may vary.

Access to Vogelraupfi is subject to a clear restriction: the area may only be entered via existing paths. People with fishing rights may walk along the banks of the Aare. If you include the protected island in a walk, take this rule into account when choosing your route.

Erratic boulder and village history

The Rhône Glacier reached the Bannwil area and deposited moraines there. One erratic boulder is described as the “largest erratic boulder in the Bernese Mittelland”; this classification is based on an assessment supported by literature. The stone is 15 m long and has a volume of 330 m³. In Bannwil’s landscape, a geological sign of the Ice Age sits alongside an erratic boulder with precisely stated dimensions.

Bannwil is documented in records dating back to 1262. The municipality contains numerous burial mounds from the Hallstatt period and the Early Middle Ages; a church was first mentioned in 1304. These milestones add a long human history to the landscape. The finds and references come from different eras and give the historical side of a visit its own focus.

Water engineering and fish pass

The history of hydropower in Bannwil is also linked to specific structures. The first Bannwil power station was built between 1899 and 1904 by the German company W. Lahmeyer & Cie in Frankfurt am Main. Most of the 8.4 km headrace canal from Wangen an der Aare to Bannwil was dug by hand. The construction period, canal route and building method show different aspects of water engineering in the region.

There is also a new fish pass at Bannwil hydroelectric power station. BKW reported that it entered service on 27 June 2025. In the tailrace, the facility has two separate entrances: one is near the turbine outlets and is intended for strong-swimming species such as salmon and trout. The second is farther away and is designed for weaker-swimming fish, such as juvenile fish. The entrances therefore differ both in location and in suitability for the swimming abilities of the fish species mentioned.

Farm shops and a place to eat by the Aare

Various goods can be bought directly from most farmers in Bannwil. The specific products on offer may vary from farm to farm. Direct sales add another way to discover local agricultural produce to the landscape and history themes.

Chrigu's Aarebeizli is a cosy grill restaurant right by the Aare in Bannwil. Since May 2025, it has been open daily in fine weather. As opening depends on good weather, check whether this condition is met before planning a visit.
