Torvsjö Kvarnar combines technical history with a tangible connection to nature: an easily accessible hiking trail runs along Kvarnbäcken. The water-powered mill complex is still operational, has been a legally protected listed building since 1972, and is a cultural environment of national interest. It is open to visitors.

Cultural History and Local Life

In the centre of Åsele is the Åsele Hembygdsområde, with 17 buildings and 50 exhibitions. The site includes a clothing museum and an exhibition on the history of the Sámi in the municipality. In summer, guided tours are offered around the grounds and through the buildings. During a visit, you can learn about both the different buildings and specific aspects of local history.

Åsele Marknad is a four-day summer market with origins in the 17th century. The exact dates vary. At Tegelbacksgården, traditional tunnbröd, blodbröd, fikabröd and other products baked on the farm are available. Together, the market and baked goods showcase different facets of regional culture, without relying on a fixed event date.

River and Landscape in Every Season

Åsele lies in forest country between the mountains and the coast. The Ångermanälven flows through the municipality and offers opportunities for recreation, including fishing, swimming, canoeing and boat trips. In winter, the river often serves as a route for walking, skiing and snowmobiling. The activities range from being on the water to following winter routes along the river.

Stockholmsgata Nature Reserve contains a gorge that is 1.5 kilometres long and 50 metres deep. The reserve’s habitat is home to rare lichens such as skuggfjällmossa and trådbrosklav, as well as Siberian jays, three-toed woodpeckers and capercaillies. The gorge and these species also make the area interesting to travellers with an interest in geological features and native wildlife.

Stamsjöbadet is a gently sloping bathing area with a sandy beach, about 4 kilometres from central Åsele. It has a jetty, barbecue areas and a large car park. You can get to the bathing area by bicycle, car or on foot.

Hiking Trails and Winter Activities

Kyrkstigen is Åsele’s closest hiking trail to the town centre. It starts in Norrstrand at Gamla Lyckselevägen and runs through the forest to Älgsjö. There is also a floodlit cross-country ski trail in the town centre, groomed in winter for both classic and freestyle skiing. In summer, you can use it for walking, jogging and running.

Åslia is a ski area with lifts, about 3.5 kilometres from central Åsele; seasonal operation depends on snow conditions. The winter activities therefore differ: Åslia has lifts, while the floodlit trail in the town centre is groomed for both cross-country skiing styles.

In Stenbithöjden Nature Reserve, a hiking trail leads to Höjdakojan. It has one room and four sleeping places; from there, you can continue to Toppstugan. Facilities may be subject to seasonal conditions, so check whether they are accessible before setting out. The Åslia Magic Forest Trail starts at the car park by Åslia’s Toppstuga, which can be reached by car via a gravel road. Several wind shelters with fire pits stand along the trail through the pine forest.

The striking rock formations also offer varied experiences. Vitterhuset is a rock formation in the village of Östernoret, about 12 kilometres outside Åsele town centre. From the Östernoret bathing area, an easy hike leads there through Vittermyren and the forest. Bergvattenberget, popularly known as Offerhällan, is a viewpoint in Sörnoret. The hiking trail there has an elevation gain of 120 metres and some steeper sections; at the summit there is a wind shelter and a fire pit. Rangelsten, meanwhile, is a boulder shaped by the continental ice sheet, about 7 metres high and 4 metres wide, with an almost flat top that offers a view. It can be reached from Rangelberget via a marked trail; Rangelberget is accessible by car.

To reach the Angsjön main entrance of Björnlandet National Park from Åsele, take Route 92 towards Umeå. From the turn-off, a gravel road of about 24 kilometres leads to the main entrance; road conditions may vary.
