In Fredrika, you can weigh up illuminated routes in the village, cultural sites and natural attractions in the surrounding area. The options range from short running and exercise routes to historic buildings and outdoor trails, each offering a different focus for your stay.
Exercise in the village and surrounding area
In the centre of Fredrika, there are illuminated running and exercise routes of 2.5 and 5 kilometres. The also-illuminated ElljusspĂĄret has four designated distances; in winter, a cross-country ski trail is groomed along its 5-kilometre route. This gives you a choice of different route lengths, with a ski trail added in winter.
The illuminated Strandleden also has its own character: it leads to the campsite and offers views of the lake and the sunset. Viskaterrängen combines an annual running event with a trail-running route; event details may vary. Shorter routes of 1 to 2.5 kilometres are available in the village and in the nearby forest. When planning, you can choose between illuminated routes, a seasonal ski trail and shorter running options.
Ekopark Käringberget is located near Fredrika; the drive there takes 16 minutes. The park has at least three hiking trails. More generally, hiking trails, ecoparks and nature reserves in Fredrika offer opportunities for leisure activities throughout the year. Drottningparken is next to Servicehuset Duvan at Umevägen 7.
Culture and history in Fredrika
Fredrika Church was completed in 1797 and inaugurated in 1810. Its completion and inauguration mark two distinct stages in its history. The church is also considered a well-preserved example of neoclassical sacred wooden architecture, offering another way to appreciate the building beyond its chronology.
The grounds of the Buddharama Temple in Fredrika feature a 4.5-metre-tall statue of the monk Luang poo Thuad and a Buddha statue over 8 metres tall. There is also a stage, two smaller houses and two elephant statues. The difference in height gives a concrete sense of scale between the two statues. The history of the Sámi is also part of the cultural background of the wider area: their presence there has been documented for around 2,000 years.
Lögdastugan hosts a summer café and an Advent market; check the dates locally. Built in the 1850s, Långbäckenstugan is a museum. The upper floor contains an old classroom. The two places offer different points of interest: seasonal events at Lögdastugan and a historic interior at Långbäckenstugan.
More destinations outside the village
Six kilometres west of Fredrika, in Lake Skinnmuddselet, there is a bronze sculpture set into a rock. It is just over three metres tall, and its richly branched form is reminiscent of reindeer antlers. Its material, location and shape make it a destination in its own right, alongside the buildings and routes in the village.
A little over ten kilometres outside Fredrika are Baksjölidens skvaltkvarn and a wood-shaving mill. The mill complex dates back to the 1860s and is situated by a nature reserve and an area with pitfall traps. For road navigation, Fredrika lies between Åsele and Umeå on Road 92.
If you are considering Fredrika as a travel destination, it helps to first choose what you are most interested in: illuminated routes and cultural sites in the village, or natural and historical attractions in the surrounding area. A 16-minute drive to the ecopark is listed; the other destinations each have their own location and character.
