At Bergvattensjön, centrally located in Dorotea, the Sjöslingan trail loops around the water; Blaikfjället is home to one of Sweden’s largest wetland areas. These contrasting natural experiences are among the things that make Dorotea distinctive. Historic trails, art and cultural history also lead through the municipality. Whether you’d prefer a loop around the lake, a longer paddling trip or to explore distinctive landscapes, you’ll find a range of starting points here.

Wetland landscapes and birdlife

On Blaikfjället, expansive wetlands meet a rich variety of birdlife. In autumn, there are plenty of cloudberries; their availability is seasonal. In western Dorotea, the landscape gives way to low mountains and vast wetlands, considered a paradise for birdwatchers. From Dorotea, you can reach Blaikfjället via Road 1052 towards Borgafjäll. From there, hiking trails lead into the nature reserve. Check road and trail conditions before setting out.

Gitsfjället Nature Reserve is another place to discover a variety of natural environments. It is a Natura 2000 nature reserve that stretches across the municipalities of Dorotea and Vilhelmina. In the Rapksvuome area, wetlands, birch-covered moraine hills and ridges form a mosaic landscape; the area is also an important breeding ground for wading birds. The reserve has a hiking trail, a snowmobile trail and a shelter for resting and overnight stays. Check facilities and seasonal accessibility before your visit.

Lakeside loops and trips on the water

The easy, illuminated Sjöslingan is a circular route of about 3.3 kilometres around Bergvattensjön, centrally located in Dorotea. Along the route, you’ll find a rich variety of birdlife, several places to swim and rest areas. Check trail conditions and lighting according to the season. Fishing permits for the same lake can be purchased by mobile phone or online. The municipality’s fishing waters range from forest areas to clear mountain streams and lakes. Commonly caught sport fish include perch, pike, trout, char and grayling.

If you’re looking for a cycling loop, Mörttjärnsrundan offers an easy 11.5-kilometre route in Dorotea. Unlike the shorter Sjöslingan, it is designated for cycling; about half the route is on gravel and the other half on paved road. For a paddling trip, Björnlandsleden starts just west of Dorotea village and is about 50 kilometres long in total. Along the route, there are a few portage points and easy rapids. It is suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Rest areas, suitable camping spots for overnight stays, and opportunities for swimming and fishing round out the trip.

Hikes and winter experiences

In clear weather, the view from the trail to Toppstugan in Lajksjö stretches across Lajksjön to the mountains on the horizon. The trail leads from the community centre in Lajksjö up Hemberget. Another hiking option is Klöverfjällsleden, considered a beautiful day hike that allows you to climb Klöverfjällstoppen. The summit is 1,303 metres above sea level. Check the weather and trail conditions before setting out.

On the hike at Lillbergforsen, there are opportunities to spot forest birds, moose and bears. At Fjällån, there’s a wind shelter, a barbecue area and fishing opportunities; high water levels can affect access to the shelter. Winter has its own destinations too: the municipality has many kilometres of cross-country ski trails, as well as several facilities with ski trails and illuminated trails. Snow conditions and trail grooming vary by season. The Avasaxa ski slope is also located right in Dorotea, with a lift and a vertical drop of 90 metres. Opening hours and conditions depend on the season.

Art, church and local history

Konstvägen Sju Älvar brings art and landscape together over a long distance: the art exhibition stretches 350 kilometres from Holmsund on the east coast to Borgafjäll in the South Lapland Mountains in the west. Four of the 13 artworks are in Dorotea. The church’s history also goes back a long way. The previous church burned down to its foundations in August 1932; today’s Dorotea kyrka was inaugurated in December 1934. The church houses two sculptures by a world-famous artist.

Kyrkstigen tells the story of an earlier connection: residents of Avaträsk used the trail to reach the church in Dorotea. In Risbäck, the kyrka was built in 1858–1859 by twelve farmers from the municipality. The preserved building later served as a small school and museum; check locally for current visiting arrangements. The local heritage area of Kullerbacken has historic buildings, including a bakehouse, a loggers’ hut, a Sámi hut and a Njalla storehouse.

Another unique attraction is the Husvagnsmuseet, opposite the Polar factory in Dorotea. It displays caravan curiosities and the third Polar caravan ever built. The museum is open in summer; check the opening period before your visit.
