Hiking trails through forests, along water and through history
The approximately 15-kilometer Booleden trail runs from Boo hembygdsgÄrd in Orminge to Strömmen farm on the border with VÀrmdö, where it connects with the VÀrmdöleden trail. The route passes through forests and over rocky terrain, by small forest lakes and across meadows. It also passes lakes, viewpoints, prehistoric monuments and cultural-historical sites. Along the way, landscape and history sit side by side, without either one alone defining the character of the hike.
A distinctive viewpoint is the 70.4-meter-high Himlaberg. From there, the view stretches over forest and sea from Vaxholm to Tyresö. Those more interested in nature reserves can find old pine forests growing on rocky terrain in RensÀttra Nature Reserve. The trees are over 150 years old, and some are as much as 250 years old. The area is accessible on foot from the bus stops at Boo kyrka and Myrsjöskolan.
The 2.7-kilometer Lila slingan trail passes through a varied landscape of meadows, horse paddocks, waterways, allotment gardens, spruce forest and rocky terrain. There is a place to swim on the shore of SÄgsjön. In the western part of the nature reserve, there is also a small climbing crag with bolts fixed into the rock. These varied impressions give a visit to RensÀttra its own rhythm: open spaces, stretches of forest and water lie close together along the trails and at the places described.
Velamsund: trails and views
Velamsund Nature Reserve is in eastern Boo and borders VÀrmdö Municipality. Velamsunds gÄrd is situated in a steep rift valley between Insjön and Velamsundsviken. One option for a walk is Snigelstigen, an approximately two-kilometer trail with a quiz about the area's nature and culture. Accessible gravel paths are suitable for walking or wheelchair use; however, they are not circular routes.
Velamsund also has a 2.5-kilometer illuminated running track, a four-kilometer green route and a six-kilometer red loop. At the lower end of Rudsjön, a bird tower and an accessible viewing platform stand on the eastern side of the lake. From there, there are good views over the entire wetland and alder swamp forest. The trails, routes and viewpoints offer different ways to explore Velamsund; the information about the gravel paths and running tracks should be considered separately.
Cultural walks around Boo
The 4.5-kilometer cultural walk around Boo gÄrd and BaggensstÀket passes interesting buildings, parks, Iron Age burial grounds and remnants of the area's defensive history. For this route, the current recommendation is to avoid the shore section at Gammeludden and instead follow the signs to Lugna promenaden. Check the latest route information before your visit.
Another cultural-historical walk in Boo is about two kilometers long and can be explored independently using marked stops and maps. Its themes range from the Russian devastations to Boo gÄrd, the return of the plague and the Battle of StÀket. Some inclines may be difficult for people using a rollator, for example. Its themes and terrain give this walk a different focus from the route around Boo gÄrd and BaggensstÀket.
BaggensstÀket Cultural Reserve also brings together landscape and cultural history. In a status update dated June 11, 2026, the municipality listed the reserve as established; boundary markers and information boards were still to be installed. Its aims include preserving, developing and making accessible valuable cultural landscapes and biodiversity. These include old pine forests on rocky terrain, coniferous forests rich in broadleaf trees, broadleaf woodland and shoreline areas. Today, the BaggensstÀket waterway is used more for recreational boating and excursions, having lost its importance as a trade route.
Churches and local history
Baptisms, weddings, services and funerals take place at Boo kyrka. People also gather there for pilgrimages, confirmation and devotions, or have quiet conversations at their relatives' graves. The church's interior is inspired by early Christian Italian architecture and Romanesque basilicas. A series of stained-glass windows tells the story of the Passion; the wall and ceiling paintings are by Olle Hjortzberg.
The old Boo kapell, dating from the 18th century, is situated above the point where StÀket flows into BaggensfjÀrden and belongs to Boo herrgÄrd. During the summer season, the chapel can be rented for baptisms or weddings and accommodates 75 visitors. Together with the historical walks and traces of the area's defensive history, Boo also reveals itself as a place where religious architecture, memorial sites and the history of the waterway offer distinct ways to discover the region.
