The best-known motif in Täby Church’s paintings is the “Death’s Chessboard,” located in the western vault. The church dates from the mid-13th century. Together with its Stiglucken and bell tower, it is protected as a cultural monument under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Environment Act. Its medieval paintings and legal protected status make the church a distinctive gateway to Täby’s cultural heritage.

Discover everyday history and art

In Rönninge by, Täby’s local history museum is housed in a former 19th-century granary. Its exhibitions offer a glimpse into life and everyday routines in Täby in the past. Among other things, visitors can see a small classroom, a kitchen, a tailor’s shop, a shoe repair shop and a carpentry workshop. The rooms bring together different aspects of daily life rather than focusing on a single craft.

The landscape around Rönninge by also tells the story of how the area was used. The village lies east of Lake Rönningesjön in a cultivated valley divided into small plots. The varied terrain is shaped by the landforms of a rift valley landscape. The site has been restored as a publicly accessible demonstration farm. Here, in a car-free setting, you can experience older ways of life and traditions from before agriculture was modernised after the Second World War.

Karby Gård offers a different cultural focus: the farm is an arts and cultural centre, with several art exhibitions held in its main building each year. There is also a printmaking workshop and a café serving pastries and light meals. The exhibition programme and café offerings may change. If you are planning to attend a particular exhibition or visit the café, it is best to check the latest information beforehand.

Runestones by Lake Vallentunasjön

Around Lake Vallentunasjön, in Runriket (the Rune Kingdom), you can discover runestones and runic inscriptions at nine different locations. Jarlabankes bro is also part of the region’s cultural heritage: the causeway is 150 metres long and 6.5 metres wide, and was probably built in the 1050s. Two stones bearing runic inscriptions stand at its northern end. Runriket also features an open-air exhibition, an adventure park and a reconstruction of the Viking Age monument Jarlabankes bro.

From Jarlabankes bro, you can walk around the lake and then continue to Runriket by bike, car or bus. This offers two distinct ways to explore: individual runic inscriptions and a route through the landscape around the lake. When planning your visit, it helps to think of these as separate parts of the rune landscape experience.

Trails through forests, wetlands and cultural landscapes

The trails in Täby vary in length and theme. The approximately three-kilometre Stolpaleden trail explores the natural and cultural history of Stolpaskogen; 14 information boards are located along the route. The forest and nature trail near Täby prästgård is also three kilometres long. It passes through Täby prästgård Nature Reserve and an area of national cultural heritage interest. Traces of human activity here include evidence dating from the Bronze Age to the present day, as well as a Viking Age burial ground.

The approximately six-kilometre, blue-marked Sjöslingan trail passes wetlands and a Natura 2000 site, and runs near a prepared rest area by Käringsjön. Towards Lake Ullnasjön, a boardwalk system lets you walk through the wetlands without getting your feet wet. Small boardwalk platforms with seating are spaced at regular intervals; signs describe the surroundings with haiku by Tomas Tranströmer. The trails combine nature observation, rest stops and different forms of cultural interpretation.

Skavlöten and Ensta krog

The Skavlöten recreation area is located in Rönninge by–Skavlöten Nature Reserve at the northern end of Lake Rönningesjön. It has a bathing area with a beach and bathing jetties. Illuminated routes of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 kilometres, as well as a 10-kilometre route, start from the recreation centre. When the ice on Lake Rönningesjön is thick enough, an approximately five-kilometre ice-skating track is prepared there. This depends on the ice conditions, so check whether the track has been prepared before visiting.

The Ensta krog recreation centre borders Stolpaskogen directly. Facilities include walking and exercise trails, fire pits, a wind shelter, a playground and an outdoor gym. Buses stop at the Ensta krog stop on Stockholmsvägen; you can take the Roslagsbanan to Ensta station. As timetables may change, it is a good idea to check the latest schedule before travelling. Naturkartan, an outdoor guide for web and mobile, helps you find trails, barbecue areas and other points of interest in Täby’s natural surroundings.
