Sandstone has been quarried in Stenskogen for building stone and millstones since the 12th century. Along Brottets bana, you can encounter traces of this work in a landscape that also invites you to hike: the approximately three-kilometre trail runs between Höörs Mölla and Stanstorps stenbrott in Stenskogen. It is classified as easy to moderate; information boards at selected points tell the story of the surrounding area. It is a way to combine a walk with a glimpse into the region’s quarrying history.
Hiking trails with different highlights
For a shorter loop, try the illuminated Backaslingan near Villa Backa, which is 750 metres long. The marked Fogdarödsslingan runs for five kilometres through Fogdarödsskogen and is suitable for walking and running. A longer option is Hjärtslingan: this 11.11-kilometre trail passes through deciduous and coniferous forest, follows babbling streams and goes by ponds. The differences in length and scenery make it easier to choose a route that suits your plans.
Frostavallen also offers hiking options of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The Vaxsjöslingan there is just under three kilometres long and has paved surfaces. It can be used with a pushchair; wheelchair users may need assistance. If you are looking for a longer route, the 16-kilometre Pilgrimsleden starts at Frihetens kapell by Stiftsgården Åkersberg in Höör. Skåneleden sections SL2 and SL3 run parallel through the centre of Höör and both pass the railway station.
Nearby, the Orups strövområde combines marked woodland loops with traces of past use, including the former Orup sanatorium, historic burial mounds and abandoned farmsteads. The Orup mountain biking area has four routes ranging from 800 metres to 6.4 kilometres. Höör Municipality also offers cycling on mountain bike trails, former railway embankments and the Sverigeleden long-distance cycle route. Sport anglers can choose from six bodies of water and around twenty fish species in the municipality.
Cultural history in Höör
Kulturhuset Anders in the centre of Höör brings together a range of cultural events: concerts, theatre, dance, art exhibitions and cinema are held here. The building is also home to Höörs konsthall, which hosts around ten exhibitions each year. Recurring events at Kulturhuset Anders include Höörs sommaropera and Kulturkvartersdagen.
Höörs skolmuseum offers another glimpse into local history. It is housed in a fieldstone building dating from the 1830s, which was Höör’s first school. The Fogdaröds museum presents the history of Fogdaröd through key dates, beginning in 1907; it is open to individual visitors and groups. Minnenas museum in Höör is a family museum focusing on toys, household items, cars and motorcycles.
Höörs kyrka is also worth a look for its surviving architectural features: the apse, chancel and nave come from the medieval church. It was built in the second half of the 12th century by Mårten Stenmästare, using stone from Höörs stenskog, just like Lund Cathedral. The original baptismal font bears the runic inscription “Martin mik giarde”. Berggrenska gården in the centre is a Scanian farmhouse from the 19th century; art exhibitions are held in the museum, and private exhibitions are possible. The site is currently closed until further notice.
Nature and excursions in the surrounding area
There are 18 nature reserves in Höör Municipality. Many have hiking loops and picnic spots. Nearby, a 3.7-kilometre walking loop in Västra Bosjöklosterhalvön Nature Reserve runs partly along Västra Ringsjön. Bosjökloster, on a peninsula in Ringsjön, combines 900 years of history with a park, gardens and exhibitions. Other attractions described there include animal enclosures, playgrounds and rowing boats on the lake; smørrebrød and lunch dishes are served, prepared from scratch with a large share of ingredients from local producers.
Families can also enjoy animal experiences, meet Shaun the Sheep and see living dinosaurs at nearby Skånes Djurpark. Some seasonal offerings may change. Höör Municipality also has six public bathing spots, maintained by the municipality during the bathing season from 1 June to 31 August; water conditions vary by season. In winter, Frostavallen offers sledding hills with shelters and a nearby barbecue area.
