First, consider whether hiking, water or culture will be the main focus of your stay. The trails and places mentioned offer different ways to explore each.
Choose hiking trails by length and route
Two of the trails described are loop walks: the red-marked Tjörnarpssjön runt is 5.8 km long; most of it runs outside the Prästabonnaskogen nature reserve. The green-marked Bokskogsrundan is 3 km long and partly runs outside the same reserve. It is therefore the shorter of the two loops. The blue-marked Tegelbruksrundan is 4.7 km in total; part of the trail passes through the Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna nature reserve.
Another option is a 3 km connecting trail north from Prästabonnaskogen to the Skåneleden SL2, Stage 6, which runs north to south. Tjörnarp’s hiking trails are accessible by Pågatåg. When planning, you can compare the stated trail lengths and markings without treating the different routes as equivalent.
Wetlands and woodland as a nature theme
Prästabonnaskogen lies between Lake Tjörnarpssjön, the church and Tjörnarp station. In the western part of the reserve, below Tjörnarps kyrka, there is a constructed wetland with an observation platform. This gives you a specific place to include in your plans for views of the wetland landscape.
Another protected area, Tegeldammarna-Lergravarna, is a municipal nature reserve in Höör Municipality. It includes the former clay pit, which once belonged to Gunnarps bruk. Most of the area consists of damp woodland with a high proportion of deadwood; it is also rich in bird and insect species. Visitors interested in habitats and wildlife will find a different focus here than on the marked hiking loops.
Lake, fishing and swimming area
There are fishing piers at Lake Tjörnarpssjön. Three rowboats can be rented from fishing-permit sellers based in Tjörnarp. There is also a lakeside swimming area for time by the water, within walking distance of Tjörnarp station. It is equipped with bathing jetties, rescue equipment, a toilet and waste disposal. An information board includes details about bathing water quality, among other things.
These options offer different activities: the fishing piers and rowboats are for fishing on the lake, while the swimming area provides a separate option for spending time by the water. Before looking for accommodation, you can decide which of these activities is important to your travel plans.
Church history and brickmaking
The area’s history also spans several periods. Ruins of Tjörnarp’s 12th-century church remain at the site of the old church. It is about 300 metres from the present-day church. A few hundred metres east of Tjörnarps kyrka are also stone settings that probably date from the Late Iron Age. The cautious dating reflects the evidence: their origin is described as probable, not certain.
Gunnarps tegelbruk is a place visitors can explore, with information boards about the brickworks. The restored ring kiln at Gunnarp has 18 firing chambers and brick-lined arched passages; it was restored in 1993–94. If you plan to visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance. This will help you balance hiking, nature and local history according to your own interests.
