Viken offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: historic buildings and maritime history, as well as coastal heath, places to swim and the chance to look out for seals off the coast. The Sophiamöllan, Vikens kyrka and Paul Jönska Gården each offer a glimpse into different aspects of the area’s history. The Vikens Sjöfartsmuseum complements them with a focus on fishing and seafaring. Along the coast, nature and bathing facilities add another dimension—a different way to get to know Viken.

Mill, farm and church

Paul Jönska Gården is a shipbuilder’s farm dating from the 1880s. Its original interior has been preserved and is one of the house’s distinctive features. The Sophiamöllan offers a different perspective: it is a Dutch-style windmill, completed and inaugurated in 1838. Together, they bring a historic farm with preserved furnishings and a mill of a clearly defined architectural style into focus.

The Sophiamöllan’s history of technology extends well beyond the period when it was built. Its sails continued to turn well into the 20th century; later, steam and electric power made wind-powered mills of this kind obsolete. When summer tours are offered, guided visits take place on the hour. They explain the mill’s history and demonstrate historic milling methods. Check before your visit to see whether tours are running.

Vikens kyrka was built of grey stone and inaugurated on 23 July 1826. That date is twelve years before the Sophiamöllan was completed and inaugurated. The dates offer a concrete point of comparison between two different buildings: the church is notable for its building material, while the mill adds its architectural style and history of operation.

Fishing and seafaring

The Vikens Sjöfartsmuseum association has been active since 1957. The museum is housed in a former fire station and preserves around 1,500 catalogued objects and documents relating to Viken’s fishing and seafaring history. Its collection brings together objects and written records, adding the area’s maritime past to the story told by its buildings. Those interested in these subjects will find a distinct focus here, alongside the mill, farm and church.

Coastal heath and bathing spot

Gräsa brygga is located in Viken’s harbour. Its facilities include a bathing jetty, a sun deck and a sauna. There is also an access ramp next to the bathing jetty, as well as a bathing wheelchair available to borrow. If you are planning to use these facilities during your visit, check in advance what is currently available and whether the bathing wheelchair can be borrowed.

The Domsten-Viken nature reserve includes coastal heath, which you can explore on the Skåneleden trail between Höganäs and Helsingborg. So, alongside the bathing spot, there is a landscape to discover along the hiking trail. You can look out for seals at a nearby shallow offshore from the reserve. This is an opportunity to spot them, not a guarantee of a sighting.
